Auto Loan Help

Hello everyone,

My name is Naijshua and I could use some expert advice as to what to do in my situation. I have an automobile that has been giving me a ton of problems recently and it's time to throw in the towel. I would like to purchase a new car but I do know my credit history isn't pretty. Are there options out there for me to get a good loan even though I have bad credit. I currently don't have any credit cards, but I do have one in bad standing that was closed years ago (in the process of cleaning it up others have been taking care).

I've never had an auto loan before and I'm fearful of being declined but I do need a car soon, really soon and I need a loan to get it. I would like to avoid high interest rates but if it's necessary I'll rough it out and then try to refinance or something the following year. Any suggestions or helpful advice would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Re: Auto Loan Help

To try to help you we will need more info:

Current FICO scores (these can be obtained from Equifax and Transunion directly or you can buy them here) If you get the scores from any other websites or monitoring services they are fake scores and dont count. So if you dont have them I would encourage you to buy one or both of them.

Monthly Income

Current mortgage or car payments if you have any or rent

Any collections on your credit report?

Any active accounts at all?

And do you have any money for a down payment?

These are just a few things to get started with.

Re: Auto Loan Help

After reviewing everything my credit score is 600. I do have two credit cards in collections with pretty high balances. I could take care of one of them very soon the other will take some time. I'm not sure what my next should be but I need a loan for a used car.

I know your not a loan agent but what's a realistic loan amount? I wouldn't want payments to high probably nothing more than 350. My only other expenses are car insurance not sure what it would go up to, cell phone which is 100, and food.

Monthly Income: 1800 after taxes

Current mortgage or car payments if you have any or rent: No car payments/ Rent is 400 a month

Any collections on your credit report? Yes

Any active accounts at all? 12

And do you have any money for a down payment? No

Things aren't looking so good for my loan. I'm determined to improve my credit score and financial future. It's apart of my news years resolution. I'll take any advice necessary. Thank you for your help. Hopefully, I can change things around. I just landed a new job after being unemployed for several months I don't if that puts a dent in things. I've been with my company since Oct and it's a sound and grounded company so I'm not going anywhere but up.

Re: Auto Loan Help

The good news is it sounds as if you have the desire and motivation now it will just take hard work and time. I am going to give you a few suggestions below and feel free to apply as many of them as you can or see fit.

1. This doesnt concern the auto loan directly but could help. The two credit card collections need to be handled. What you need to do is try to get the collection agencies to work with you in a pay for delete. In a pay for delete you offer ABC collections company $xxx.xx in exchange for them to consider the account satisfied in full AND agree to remove the account from all three of your credit bureaus. It is very important to get this in writing so you have proof in case something happens. For example. If you owe ABC collections $500.00 what you need to do is write them a letter agreeing to pay them a percentage I suggest starting with half but everone has their own way. So say I agree to pay your company $250.00 in excahnge for you to consider this account satisfied in full and that you will delete all records of the account from all three credit bureaus. They may accept, they may decline, or they may counter-offer. If they accept one you have it in writing pay them. If they decline try another pay for delete but raise the offer price. If they counter-offer see if you can agree with their offer. Once you have the agreement in writing and pay it then it should come off of your credit reports within 2 months. If you can do this with both in Jan you could feasibly have both off of your reports by March. Your score would see a great increase with the removal of all collection accounts.

2. Out of your 12 active accounts how many are installment loans and how many are revolving trade lines? The installment loans wont factor much but the revolving will. Your credit utilization plays a big factor in your score. Lets say you have $10000 in available credit limits and have a $9000 balance you are using 90% of your available credit. They dont like this. The lower you get the balances the better. Ideally you want to be between 1-9%. So on $10000 you want betwen $1-$1000 reporting. So if you have high utilization pay as much of this down as you can and you will see a score increase.

As it stands with your score and no down payment you can probably forget getting an auto loan. With this economic climate lenders are wanting alot down especially people with low credit scores. For example I recently made a used car purchase. I had a 623 at the time of the auto loan. I applied for a $9995 car and offered $2500 down. The dealership ran my stuff and had no lenders approve me. There is one local bank they work with on a special credit program. They allow them to get people with credit issues approvals that couldnt get them otherwise. So the finance manager went and talked to them and came back. He said they would work with me if I could put $3000 down. I agreed and got the loan with $3000 down at 14.9%. My payments are $260.35 a month. So you will be hard pressed to find someone to approve you. It will take a lender with a special financing arrangement like this one to get you approved as stands. Now if you get both collections removed, lower your utilization, and get a down payment you should be able to get a loan.

I know this may sound impossible but it can happen. Do you have a car now that you can use? Even if its not great or has some problems can you make it last a little longer? If not is there any public transportation you can use like a bus? Do you by chance live close enough you could ride a bike to work? If not maybe even someone that works the same place and lives close you could carpool with? You could offer them some gas money each week which will save them money and get you a ride to work?

If you can get rid of the collections, lower your utilization, and get a down payment you should be able to get a $10-$15K car in that range.

And another challenge is being new on your job. Most places like 1 year on the job but you can get financed with less. If you can get your transportation worked out for 3-6 months while you take care of the 3 things above your employment wont be as much of an issue.

Not trying to shoot you down but it is highly unlikely you willk get an auto loan in your situation until you get some things fixed. The other option would be if you had a cosigner but that is a dangerous road I dont like to travel.

I hope this helps a little and keep your head high and your eye on the prize and you will get there.

Re: Auto Loan Help

Thanks for taking the time to help me out okstatefan. I didn't expect things to be pretty. I will work on handle the balances on those two credit cards. Both I know one of them I could hanld before march the other is will take a several months because it's 5,000 dollars.

I was working with a company [Edited] to have them help me clean up my credit. Wow wouldn't they have me pay for delete on my accounts. I did this last year thinking it was going ot help. Since then I've clean up some cards but I know they aren't deleted.  Is there anyway to have them deleted now?

I guess I could stay with my current car. It's a pain though because it's hard to balance your money when your constantly having unexpected maintenance problem that cost you hundreds at a time. Hopefully, the cars I do the car this time around make it able to run until the beginning of the summer. I should be able to clean up those cards by then as long as the companies settle for lower amounts.

Is it realistic to think that by the end of the year I could get my score up to 700? Everything you mentioned does sound impossible? I currently don't make enough money to do everything stated, but I will work on it as hard as I can right now.

Just a friendly reminder that credit repair agencies are persona non grata in these forums, as they violate our TOS & Credit Repair Guidelines. Thanks for understanding! ~ Moderator LilMirth

You can ask for them to be deleted now. It's called writing a goodwill letter. You write to them, state your case, tell them what you are doing and have done to improve your financial management, and ask if they would please remove the account from your credit reports. This takes writing letters or sending emails, and it can take several attempts. Do some reading in the Rebuilding Your Credit forum. Search for threads about writing goodwill letters. That's the only chance you have with an already paid account.

Good luck. Rebuilding takes patience and hard work...but at least you've started down that path.

Re: Auto Loan Help

It is possible to get to 700 by tne end of 2010. It is important that the collection accounts you arrange for a pay for delete. If you pay off a collection it counts just the same as if you never paid it. The only way to undo the damage is to have it removed. So just try hard for the pay for deletes, work on getting the balances down, and keep your nose clean and you should start seeing the scores climb.
