You can sell it to her . If you want to stay on title/loan you can refinance it and add her.

i would suggest selling.

Re: Auto loan transfer?

Second the suggestion on selling, so it's only in her name. NOTE: In some states, a sale gets hit with sales tax if you guys aren't married. Still worth it imo. If she has no baddies and has a FICO score (aka has credit for 6 months+), she should be in the 700s if she manages her utilization well.

I'd have her hit up DCU. They'll approve for 1.74% for 65 months with a 675+ EQ FICO usually... Also ask them before applying, but I'm pretty sure DCU does private party loans, no problems.

Re: Auto loan transfer?

This is my first auto loan myself. So when i sell her the car it would be the current balance on my loan? So when a bank gives her the loan what information would they need from me for her to buy the car?  Sorry im only 25 and a noob at this stuff

Re: Auto loan transfer?

No worries buddy! it has nothing to do with age btw...plenty of people 35 have no idea since they haven't had an auto loan before. Smiley Wink On the other hand, there's people who are like 18 who have experience as they've went through the process.

So for a second, imagine that this wasn't your girl or someone you knew. You're selling the car to this random person. When you sell to your gf, it follows the same process. You'll sell at FMV (fair market value) officially.

Do me a favor, give me this info:

Current NADA Retail Value of Car?

Current Balance owed on Auto Loan?

State of residence? (If you are in a state which has county sales tax like NYC, county/city of residence too?)

We plan on doing the switch around septemeber so around then it will be 15k and some change around that time. And we will be willing to  put down additonal 3k, the car is a 2010 honda accord coupe my credit wasnt that good at the time i believe it was around 625-640 and interest rate at 12%. The warranty that was for $2500 is not showing on my credit report just the price of the car and taxes, but with the warranty total price was like 21k something and my monthly payments is $431, her credit score is in the mid 700s just wanna make sure we are making the right decision.

Re: Auto loan transfer?

You won't need to put anything extra down as long as she has enough income. You're welcome to put money down if you just want to reduce the loan's balance?

I looked up NJ state tax law for you. Looks like you'll be hit on a amount the NJ DMV determines (regardless of sale price). NJ DMV gets this mostly from NADA from what I gather. Since this is the case, it won't matter. Just sell the car @ loan balance to keep your lives easy. Smiley Happy No need to sell @ NADA value.

Also note that the sales tax bill is going to be ~.07*19000=1330. So don't put all of that 3k down and then figure out that wait, whoops, we can't pay the DMV to register the car now.

Like I said before, I recommend DCU for someone with 700+ credit scores. But call them first before applyign and explain the situation to make sure they'll do a private party sale for you guys.

Another idea to consider: what if she buys your car for you in her name? That way you save sales tax transferring the accord (maybe you can refi it in your own name to lower apr)? She'll need the income to buy whatever car you're considering. Of course, if you eventually have to transfer the two cars (say a breakup), you'll now owe two sales taxes on that transfer. But maybe if you buy equivalently valued vehicles, you can agree to just not bother swapping even if you guys breakup? If/when you get married, you can transfer amongst yourself with no sales tax hit.

Re: Auto loan transfer?

This is going to depend based on the bank/state. In general, they will want:

1) Payoff quote from AHF

2) Bill of sale (depends on state)

3) Signed title - a little complex since you don't HAVE the title...you have to talk to the bank about this

4) Income proof for gf

And they might rquire more documents. You really need to talk to them to get the answer to your question. Just explain your situation carefully, they'll know what to do.
