Disputing/removing a hard credit pull

We purchased a new Honda Accord, but due to various reasons, we returned the vehicle within 48 hours. We are purchasing a different model now.

The dealer told us that they have to do a 2nd hard pull on our credit report. (This, in spite of being approved just a few days ago, and having purchased several vehicles from them over the years).

1) Is it true that they *have* to do a 2nd hard pull because "it is a different vehicle"? (Actually less in price than the 1st)

2) If so, can I contact the credit bureaus to have the hard pull "removed"?

1)   It depends on how they're handling your financing, if they're starting the process over.   Assuming it's a different dollar amount ( more expensive? ) or a new lender then yes that could be a possiblility.

2)  It's a legitimate inquiry so I don't believe you'd have any grounds to dispute / remove.   Additionally I think the score impact should be minimal ( or zero ) as auto inquiries within a certain window ( 45 days?  ) would be grouped together for scoring purposes.

Re: Disputing/removing a hard credit pull

Thank you, @pizzadude. That was very helpful.

It is the same lender (American Honda), a lower dollar amount, and a different vehicle.

I thought that credit pulls had to occur basically on the same day for them to be grouped together. I will call the big 3 credit bureaus to verify that bit of information.

It may be that lender's processes require starting underwriting over from scratch with a brand new inquiry / loan.

If the inquiries are coded correctly as Auto, and they're within 45 days, they'll be grouped together for scoring.   This FICO Primer is very detailed and should also be helpful to explain.

There's no need to call anyone. It's called binning and done for auto and mortgage so you can shop for the best rate without hits to your score.  Unfortunately, all the inquiries will show up individually and can impact credit seeking with lenders In the future.

Sounds like they're going to start a new loan from scratch which would require a new pull. No, the previous pull can't be disputed. It's nearly impossible to get an inquiry removed on its own, let alone because you decided to go with a different car.

All good info that has been mentioned, OP. And for what it's worth, the extra inquiry will probably have little to no impact anyway.

If you're denied because of inquiries chances are there was something else that bothered the lender as well.
