Until this chip shortage gets resolved there isn't much haggling to be done anyway. Many dealers are holding MSRP or charging over depending on their inventory.
I don't agree with this but not much you can do if you live in an area where dealers are doing this type of stuff.
Take a deal if you can find one and be willing to walk away if you can't is what I'm suggesting to folks these days.I never found haggling to be effective in special order cases. I'm basically going to a car manufacturer and telling them I want a specific car in a specific configuration that only they can make, so I don't really have expectations that they're going to budge off MSRP given they're the one and only place I can buy said car from.
I have sold many custom orders for under msrp to my clients, and I only worked in the auto industry for a year and a half. The dealer likes it because they don't have to floor plan a unit and they know they are going to get a free +1 to their volume score. The manufacturer is building the cars regardless of whether it is a custom order or not. Now, if you are looking for a custom order on a low production vehicle there is likely not as much of a discount to be had.

I'm not sure what constitutes a high or low production car, so I just looked up what numbers I could find.
The last two times I did this were for cars with a US production of 3,479, with my particular engine configuration maybe around a third of that (numbers aren't released), and 28 for the second. The latter definitely sounds like low production, but ~3,500 not so much.
It's also my first time doing a factory order. And my dealer told me it's going to take about 5 months to have it delivered. The delivery has been slow this year. With that said, I've been asked about a deposit and how much I can put down, but they never charged me for some reason. Is that normal?

Congrats, hope the wait isn't too long.
@disdreamin Hopefully not dealer could have been blowing smoke lol. He told me they do most volume in state and they have priority in orders over smaller dealers in state.🙃

This is actually true. High volume dealers do tend to get priority over smaller/lower volume dealers. It's more model specific than it is overall inventory specific. Congrats on pulling the trigger.

Simply put, you're leaving money on the table.
Chapter 13:
I categorically refuse to do AZEO!

Production delays have been pretty extreme this year, so 5 months is pretty reasonable. Not charging you for the deposit is not unheard of, some dealerships don't charge cards and just keep the card number on file. Some dealerships will chage a card and then refund when you purchase, if you are putting no money down. It just depends on dealer policy.

Our factory order will end up being 3 months almost to the day when it arrives at the dealership. As far as money down, my understanding is that as long as you have a buyers order then the vehicle has your name on it and you should be fine.
The only unfortunate thing is that I've heard of (hopefully isolated instance) a dealership selling a special ordered vehicle out from under someone recently. That person did not put anything down and I don't believe they had a buyers order, it was all done with a handshake. The window sticker indicated the name of the person it was ordered by, but the dealership wanted MSRP for the vehicle when it arrived. The person who ordered it and had negotiated price at the time it was ordered refused the price increase, so the story is that the dealership sold the vehicle to another party. Basically saying "make sure you have it in writing" as usual.
