GAP Insurance

Any suggestions on where to get GAP?   We have USAA for insurance (Car is not financed through there) and I can't find anything on their website that shows they sell it.

USAA has a car replacement assistance option, costs about 15 bucks for 6 months I believe, it is esentially GAP plus 20%.  I wouldn't buy GAP if you can get that option.  Dealers mark up GAP.  When I refinanced with NFCU I bought GAP through them but that was before I had USAA.  Happy to be with USAA for my insurance needs.  This one is a great option.

Re: GAP Insurance

Can I get a link to that USAA insurance program? Just bought a car and didn't want the GAP. I remember I read this right beforeI bought the car and wanted to get some more information about it.

Re: GAP Insurance

Negative, I paid $250 for my truck and $250 for my car from DCU. Dealership is expensive.

fair point. I was thinking of dealership financing.

So dealer is most expensive, financing is second. Auto insurance is 3rd Smiley Wink

Re: GAP Insurance

Never knew auto insurers offered GAP insurance, that's good to know! I purchased GAP from a dealer in 2013 prior to knowing they rip you off, cost me $1,000!? On the plus side when I refinanced the following year it was refunded to me at a pro rated rate, as was the "warranty" I got suckered into. I ended up getting a fat check.

Re: GAP Insurance

when i bought my Infiniti a few years ago, the dealer offered GAP for $795. My insurance company offered it for $35/year (cancelable at anytime).

Re: GAP Insurance

I paid $695 for my gap from the VW dealer I purchased at. I was told by my sister who now sells insurance, and who used to be a finance manager at a car dealership that your auto insurance company is less likely to total your car if you've purchased your total loss/gap through your auto provider, as it costs them more money (obviously).

May be true, may not be true, may be a myth, who knows. when it comes to the cost of the car, $695 is small potatoes. it's like $9 a month over the course of my loan.
