High DTI question: Can amount hubby pays on mortgage be counted as “other income”?

I very urgently need to get another car since my 10 year old, 200k mile clunker may not make it another two week without a major repair. I would like to get a newish car and finance around $30k.

However, right now my DTI is so high I don’t know if I’ll qualify for anything. Both my Fico8 and Fico auto enhanced 8 scores range from 670 to 690. I make $108k a year.

I am married and have a mortgage that is only in my name. My husband is self employed and it was easier for us to qualify without him on the loan. He pays the mortgage every month. He contributes amounts to our joint account to pay it.

With the mortgage included, with my other debt payments, my DTI is a little over 50%.
This may be a long shot but I’m wondering if it would be permissible for me to include my husbands payments on the mortgage as “other income” to get around the DTI issue?

The good news is I should be able to qualify in a month outright since I am about to pay off all my credit card debt. The bad news is that I’m not sure my old car will make until then, so that’s the reason for the rush. I would greatly prefer not having to make a costly repair on this car. Ideally id like to qualify now even if the rates are bad and then immediately refi when my scores and DTI improve. MyFICO projects my scores should go up about 70 points when my credit card payments report.

Some lenders don't require proof of income. With that said, you should be able to declare any income you can prove you pay taxes on.

While it might be a bit of a headache, if you've filed your taxes jointly for the past two years; your taxable income should be acceptable to most banks (should they require proof).

Just state a little less than your household income.

$30k car with $100k+ salary should not flag anything.

Credit unions are more likely to require income proof.

Check Cap One Navigator for pre approval.

Rebuild started in 2014  -  $100k unsecured credit in 2017  -  $500k unsecured credit in 2024.

Thanks everyone. I try to get pre qualified for a loan through cap one and included the extra income. I still was denied. Smiley Sad. I guess I just need to be patient and not try to rush things.

This is great info though in case I run into any problems on the future.
