I see a lot of post here mentioning DCU. I checked out there site and they have great interest rate, but how do you all qualify? Don’t you have to live near it to qualify to join? I doubt all the people here actually live in that party of the east coast. Am I missing something? I would like to also join.
From what I've read you simply have to be a res of the continental US and if you don't qualify by other means you can donate $10 I think to one of their approved charities take a HP on EQ and your in. Though I recall one person being denied for a bad CHEX report I think it's called. Where the report bad checks. I'm sure others will provide more details should you need them. I'm sure you can call DCU and they will tell you all you need to know. I hear they are friendly.
Best of luck!

+1 on the COLOR copy of the SSN and DL. They will deny and need you to resubmit those documents.

This is referred to as ChexSystems. If you improperly handle a banking relationship with a financial institution (such as account close while negative, bouncing multiple checks, etc), they can report you to ChexSystems. Think of it as a CRA for checking accounts!
Ive been a member for over a year. Took about a week to join.
Sign up for savings account online. Donate to the cheapest one on the list (i think it was 10 bucks), fund the savings account, send in required documents (in COLOR like others have noted), a week later I had my membership packet. Everything after that has been a breeze and I absolutely love DCU.
Tried to add my husband to my account and he was denied due to credit score. When I asked DCU what score was needed I was told at least a 620.
They offered me a car loan at 6% - which is high but way better than the 15-20% I was being offered elsewhere. Used thier aprroval for dealer competition actually.
I have a checking, savings and HSA with DCU. Everything is "fee free". I was paying about 45 a year in fees on my HSA account with another bank. I dont pay anything at DCU - checks and check card are fee too.
I hear thier second chance auto loans are awesome too. Havent used that yet.
Direct deposit of pay checks hits two days before actual payday.
The ability to take a picture of a check for deposit is a neat perk too. And its available within a few hours if done in the morning. <-- This might be something other banks have but I live in a tiny town and our "home grown" banks that I use here do not allow this.
