Does it count as falling out of the garden if you didn't take an explicit HP for it, and didn't get the approval? (Honest, I took the HP to open the checking account, days ago!)
Just hung up with a PenFed LO. He said they needed at least two open tradelines with enough history to approve me for a refinance.
My oldest is a mortgage that was backdated to 2003. My next oldest is the auto loan I was trying to get out of, opened in June 2017.
He suggested I call back in February, when that account would be old enough to include in whatever internal scoring they were using.
IMHO Not all all. Refi, autoloan, mortgage is not a garden issue. Nor is credit that you really need for something. Just wait a few months then get it done.

I agree with @marty56
Refi-ing into better terms should NOT be seen as falling out of gardening, as a matter of fact
one could see it as tending to weeds and being a better gardener by tending to the overall health of the garden, itself
I also agree that 'really needing' could also get a pass...HOWEVER, this one gets tricky because 'who' decides
'really' need "credit crack" can convince too many 'would like to haves' into 'really needs' = playing with fire...
With proper management there shouldn't be too many 'really needs'...that's the point of management/gardening in the 1st place
to manage/control/plan...that being said/done, again the NEED to app, outside of planned events, shouldn't be such a concern... if it is, then THAT is falling out
