Rethinking Cap1 approval

Hey, I was recently approved for a 24k auto loan from Capital One.  I have some documents to send in still, but in the last few days I have been reconsidering if I want to go through with it.  The email I received said that if I failed to turn in the documents, my application would be considered withdrawn.

If I choose not to take further action, how would that affect my credit score?  Would it be reported as a denial?  Or is it currently just a soft pull for preapproval?  I have zero understanding of how this works, so I apologize if it is obvious.

denial... they denied me because all the utility bills are in my fiance's name & i don't have any in my name. there is no out. they will only take utility. upsets me because i have everything else in my name car inusrance, home insurance, cell phones, credit cards, etc... but he insisted on being the "man" and putting all the utilites in his name when we bought the place. he had no idea this would happen. i am p.o.'d because  it's dumb because when i was younger fresh out on my own, my utilities were all in my parents name as they let me stay in the house after they bought a new home. that means they had two residences of which they had utilities & only lived at one. so that still is not proof of where the vehicle is. current car insurance bill imo would be more accurate.

Not all is lost. I`m sure you`ll still get financing from some other bank. In fact, I`ll bet you that if you trying financing from your dealership one of the offers will be from Capital One Bank, and when you tell them they wouldnt finance you under the blank check program & why -- They`ll tell you they never have that problem on their loan offers. Smiley Very Happy

Capital One is just a big PITA that suffers from multiple bi-polar disorders when it comes to any kind of lending. I`ll continue to bank there, but I`ll never finance another car through them, and am in the process of "retiring" the 4 cards I have with them.

I really appreciate the comments, but nothing yet has definitively answered my question.  I did read that I don't HAVE to use the check they send.  Does that mean that until I do and the check is cashed, there is no impact to my score?

No, they most likely pulled your credit via hardpull - Otherwise they wouldnt have preliminarily approved you. They did mine when I applied for and was blank check approved even though I never ended up using it. You most likely have a new inquiry on your credit file. Since I bought my car within the allowed period for scoring using a different finance source  ( C-1 through the dealership ) the subsequesnt pulls plus the the blank check ap only counted as one.

What to know about "rate shopping."

Looking for a mortgage, auto or student loan may cause multiple lenders to request your credit report, even though you are only looking for one loan. To compensate for this, the score ignores mortgage, auto, and student loan inquiries made in the 30 days prior to scoring. So, if you find a loan within 30 days, the inquiries won't affect your score while you're rate shopping. In addition, the score looks on your credit report for mortgage, auto, and student loan inquiries older than 30 days. If it finds some, it counts those inquiries that fall in a typical shopping period as just one inquiry when determining your score. For FICO scores calculated from older versions of the scoring formula, this shopping period is any 14 day span. For FICO scores calculated from the newest versions of the scoring formula, this shopping period is any 45 day span. Each lender chooses which version of the FICO scoring formula it wants the credit reporting agency to use to calculate your FICO score.
