Salesmans can be desperate

I don't have a question, just explaining what happened to me last month.

My salesman at a local Chevy dealer that sold me my current car as well as my cousin and pops cars wanted me to come check out a new Impala. I like those cars. Very roomy.

I currently drive a 2012 Impala LTZ. The car is okay but I would love to trade it in if I could. I've had it since July 2013. It gets good gas mileage (21mpg) and the only mechanical issue I've had with it was a replacement for a gas vapor canister (can't remember the actual name). That canister cost me $188. I bought my 2012 used with 30k miles. It now has 54k. Its an okay car but its not as roomy inside and the car handles terribly. It also has a lot of blind spots. I love to drive and these older Impalas are NOT those type of cars. Very cheap car.

I went to the dealer last month and he just wanted to check to see where I can be payment wise since they had a sale and were offering a 3k rebate on a new Impala. To lease a new Impala will cost me about 460 a month for 48 months with 3500 down. I owe about 15k on my current car and the dealer will only offer me 11,500 for it. The rebate plus my DP will cover the negative equity. He didn't run my credit (or so he says) but that payment is far to high. I currently am paying 278 @ 2.2% with DCU. I knew it wasn't possible but I was hoping to be around 300 a month on the new car.

Since it was the end of may, he was really trying to get me to buy a car but I am not paying any car note above 320. I told him I will need to save a bit more money and even when I do I may either get a smaller cheaper car (Toyota Corolla) or keep my current car.

I believe Toyota Camry/corolla/rav4 has $199/mo 24 mos lease only v/s a 36 mos and higher payment for Impala and your negative equity will be diminished if you can get a better value for your Impala at toyota dealership.Have to run the numbers to do a good job of evaluating the lease.

You must love a toyota to make it happen. Just an idea to ponder on?

Oh most definitely. I love Toyotas. My first car was a 94 Corolla. Loved that little car. Yea I think a Toy will be a much better deal than a Chevy anyways. I'm not really a huge fan of american cars anymore (well except mopar) and I am sure this awesome Toyota dealership in Oak Lawn can give me a great deal. I might try it next year.

Re: Salesmans can be desperate

What is the sales price for the Impala? That seems like a really high lease payment. I have a 2014 Ford Escape and my lease for 36 months is only $365, price was $32k plus tax and title. Which I guess we pay an extra tax in Chicago for leases? I did put down $5k as well and received a $1500 credit for trading in another Ford.

The sales price was about 28,500. He didn't run my credit so all he could do was give me a ball park figure. I also thought the monthly payment for that lease was way to high my self. Even if I could afford it, I would not have paid anywhere near the $460 a month he was talking about.

Re: Salesmans can be desperate

It sounds like he quoted you something with all the bells and whistles. I think when I checked one out last year they threw $399 which seemed high at the time as well.

Re: Salesmans can be desperate

It was the LT w/V6. No sunroof. No leather. No navi. It came only with standard features. I am still confused by such a high lease note. After doing some math, I would need at least 10k down to get that LEASE payment to a managable number I am confortable with and thats not including a 3k rebate on the car itself. If I were to go to a different dealer they may give me a better number with less down. I would like a newer car, I really do not like this 2012, but it isn't mandatory. Since I at least have some wheels under me I can deal with this car for another year or two. I probably would get a Toyota as my next car too.

Re: Salesmans can be desperate

The Toyotas probably have a better residual than the Chevys, so I could see why Checy wants a high payment. I just couldn't imagine paying $460 per month to lease a pretty standard Impala.

I hope he was talking $460 to buy not to lease or you need to never talk to this sales person again!

get yourself a simple calculator on your phone like "ez loan calc"

$28500 for 60 months at 2.2% (what you have now) with nothing down because that probably doesn't include tax, so I will just leave the $3500 down as taxes not towards price of car only comes to $502/month on 60 months!

Dont get talking about monthly payments BEFORE you know what the cost of the car is.

and TrueCar the car with options that you want before you start talking about price with a dealership
