Wait, a 2014 200? You know they're releasing a redesigned 2015 200 that is approximately 200 times better looking at least (I haven't driven a 2015 yet) right? Personally I'd be cautious about buying a 2014 200, just because the depreciation is going to painful on that car. But if you like the car and are planning to keep it, I wouldn't stop you either. Just make sure you get a freaking awesome deal and use the fact that it's a relatively unpopular model being refreshed next year to get a kick a** price (PM if you want and I can help you out with negotiating the price/guesstimating if you're getting a fair price). Also get GAP insr., but have your auto insr. co. give you a quote. Probably much cheaper than dealer GAP. My friend's was $1/month through the auto insr. co vs 300 at a dealer.
As far as recommendations, this is a little over the price of a 200, but have you looked at the '14 Accord? So I'll preface with it'll run you probably 21k-ish for a base LX (depends on your states taxes) if negotiated properly, so that's a chunk more than 16k for a 200. But a friend got it, I like the looks and it's generally been applauded. Only thing I hate about the '14 Accord: the headrests! Feels somewhat like my head is being forced down into my chin. 25 miles should be fine though...not sure about 50+ miles tbh.
My other recommendation would be looking at an Altima or Mazda6. Haven't driven the Mazda, but it looks great haha. And I have driven the Altima. It's a more basic interior styling than the Accord (no screen on the base model, etc), and the steering felt heavier than my preference. BUT man if I had a commute of any kind, I'd get an Altima...those front seats are to DIE for at least for me haha.
Sorry about the midsize sedan heavy list, they tend to run at 21kish out the door on base mdoels if negotiated properly with no extras. You can probably tell the type of cars I've always driven lol.
If it has to be under 20, I've don't know how comfy compact cars are, but I've heard good things about the Mazda3 and cruze. But again, I am not sure how comfortable compact cars tend to be (rarely drive them). They do get good EPA numbers however. In terms of midsize though the current 200 is probably the biggest car for the money, just a lot of people dislike them. If it works though, you can get some awesome deals on them.
One more thing, I recommend you be VERY careful if you go to a car dealership before your mortgage closes even for a test drive. I'd hesitate from giving them your full name, address. DoB, or SSN. They only need 2-3 of the 4 to run credit and they tend to be trigger happy. Aka they run even when they arguable don't have permissible purpose since they want to sell a car. So yeah, I know it's restrictive, but if I were you I wouldn't even allow them to copy my DL if they ask for a test drive before closing just because if you goto a bad dealership and they run credit, closing can become a headache. Looking around can't be too harmful as long as you don't slip on your exact last name or something. Not saying all dealerships are bad like this, but I've seen horror stories.
