How long?

Quick question - How long after my BK7 discharge can I apply for a cc?
Is there a waiting period before I can attempt to get any credit??

Thanks!

Re: How long?

There is no waiting period after you receive your discharge. Once you have that, your BK is finalized. You can apply the day after if you wish.

Re: How long?

Thanks for the info!  One more thing...since I took almost all the major ccc with me into BK - ( amex, citi, at&t, boa, discover, orchard, cap1, maybe one or two others )
Who do I apply to that may give me a card?  I was in good standing with Cap1 and they shut down my card when the BK was filed...

Re: How long?

That's a good question. My BK7 was discharged in 11/07, and I have applied for 3 different CC's to date. I have been denied for all. The only thing I have been approved for is an orchard bank secured card which I am still waiting for it to come through the mail.

Re: How long?

Whatever you do, DO NOT reapply with the CCCs you included in your BK. None of them will give you a second chance and so soon after BK, and the big boys like Amex, BofA, Discover and Citi are not forgiving. Amex may offer you the Oasis program, but that program is only for people who have defaulted on a CC with them and are repaying the monies owed to Amex. CapOne may forgive your debt but I highly doubt it will be so soon. It may take a couple of years before they consider it, but my guess is they won't. Orchard may forgive, but that's a bad credit CC to begin with. Citi, from what I hear, has been in the forgiving mood lately, but only to those whose BKs were filed 7+ years ago, and I'm not even sure if that information is accurate.

Try your local CUs. They are better at helping their members rebuild. The offers you get in the mail with $250 CLs and $175 in fees are simply not worth it so shred each and every one you get. You would be better off getting a secured CC where you are setting your own CL, and it is better than those loan sharks who will come after you soon after your BK is discharged. Hopefully, you have learned from your past mistakes and will treat your credit with better care this time around. Smiley Happy

All the best!
