Open account in Chapter 7

I am awaiting discharge in just under 6 weeks, hopefully!  According to my credit report I have one account open, Dell Financial. It shows to be current with 0 balance and a $5k limit. Last reporting as of the end of May.

Will this help my Fico scores after discharge?  Should I try to charge something small on it just to show utilization?  Or should I anticipate this being closed soon?

Very rarely a credit card account will survive bankruptcy, but in your case I would not do anything with that card until you have received your discharge and then if it's still showing as open, try making a small test charge.   You don't want to go poking the bear on something that mIght turn out to help you in the long run.   I suspect they just haven't updated yet and I would leave well enough alone for now.

Thanks, I thought if it survives through discharge it might be better to just let it be and apply for an unsecured CC.  Would using it for a small amount help more than not using it?

Welcome @Streydog

There are a few that survive BK. Not many. Forget it exist until the DC letter is in your hands. Get the BK in the rear view mirror first. Dont worry about rebuilding until then.

Re: Open account in Chapter 7

My Dell Financial account survived my bankruptcy filed in 2014 because it had no balance, and I forgot it existed. The $6k credit limit ended up helping my score with utilization a bit after initial rebuilding. It definitely affects my average age of accounts as it predates everything else I have.

2025: TU 823, EQ 837, EX 827 on 10/25/25; BCU home equity ($31k) and car ($15k); $104k of revolving credit with under 5% average monthly utilization
2024: TU 778, EQ 737, EX 734 on 12/1/24; BCU home equity ($33k) and car ($18k) loans; mortgage reaffirmed in BK ($76k); $77k of revolving credit with under 5% monthly utilization
2016: EX 646 8/8/16 (599 after BK), TU 655 7/18/16 (568 after BK), EQ 663 3/15/16 (620 after BK); BK7 in 2015; co-signer on private student loans previously in default, forgiven in 2022 and 2024

Re: Open account in Chapter 7

I had a couple of accounts survive. After DC, I charged a small amount to start rebuilding positive payment history. I still have 3 accounts that report as open, I can log in and make payments, but I can't use them. It helps with utilitzation so I just thank the credit cards every time they show as open

Re: Open account in Chapter 7

I am a month out from discharge and it has stayed open as well.  I have been able to get  $3k Capital One card and a $3k Mission lane card, both no AF.  Fico 8 scores ranging 609-641.  Still waiting on one account that was sold to a collection agency right at the time I filed to show on my reports, I assume my scores might dip a little when that happens.
