Paying back AMEX

I had to accounts with Amex included in my recent BK13!

They placed the accounts with Becket & Lee !

Can i pay them back?

Or will i just be opening some can of worms?

Re: Paying back AMEX

Well, first...in a BK13, you pay your creditors back. Was your 13 a 100% payback plan? If so, they are getting paid back, just not as quick as they would like.

Im assuming B&L is a CA? They can't do that if you're currently in a BK13, and NO, you can't just pay them. That would be and is considered perferential treatment to a creditor, and could get your BK dismissed all together. I wouldn't risk that!

If you have extra money to pay more to a certain creditor, you just pay more into your BK13 and that will lessen the time, and pay it off quicker.

Id let your BK attorney know asap what Amex has done, and he will let the trustee know. You have to ask for permission for any and everything from the trustee in a BK13, so id call your attorney.

Absolutely agree, don't pay anyone anything outside of your BK13 plan, bad things can happen.

Becket & Lee doesn't seem to be a CA, their website says: "Becket & Lee has serviced bankrupt accounts since 1984, with an emphasis on consumer debt. Unlike other law firms and collection agencies, all of our resources, processes and staff are focused on maximizing our clients' bankruptcy recoveries. We do not purchase our clients' accounts, thus avoiding any possible conflict of interest."

It sounds like they work with the Trustee to try to maximize Amex's recovery. Good luck with that . . .
