Since Discharge, I have noticed my attitude, and behavior towards credit/spending has changed

I filed in June, and discharged on the 24th of September. The whole time from filing to discharge I was chomping at the bit to start the rebuilding process, just seriously wanting to jump in both feet, and get started, mostly because I know it takes so long and the sooner I start the sooner I can reach the 700 finish line..

However, The first couple days after discharge I started poking around, and considering applying for cards, and only really put in a single application.  (I did do the prequal at cap one, and credit one, both came back with no offers, probably because i burned cap on in the bk).  The only place I applied so far was NFCU, and while I was decilned, I decided to go ahead and open up a 2000 credit builder secured loan, and a 1000 secured credit card.  However, since then (outside of considering a car for my wife which we have dedicded against for now), I have 0 interest in applying, or looking around. I am not sure if thats because I know i will be declined, or if its a maturing of my outlook on credit.  I am really not sure.

Funny it feels like a financial version of postpartum depression... Anyone else feel this way? like so much has been lifted from you that you are almost afraid to start building again?

This also goes towards spending, my primary focus these days is pay whats needed, save the rest.. my wife for the first time ever called me cheap, something I have always been the opposite of.

I get it! It took me 2 years to apply for anything after my BK and it was a car loan. It took 2 more years AFTER that to apply for revolving credit. BK will make you see things differently....as it should.

Nice job on the rebuilder loan and secured card 👍🏾

Funny, I feel a bit different.  So much of my bankruptcy was old medical bills of my ex's after paying off $80K of medical and student loans.  I feel free now, rather than depressed.  Smiley Happy  Congrats on your discharge, mine was 9/22.  We are buddies.

Nice congrats..

Yea I wouldnt neccisarily say its deperssed, more just blah.  more like the idea of getting credit has little appeal to me right now.  Like I said I am not sure if its more because I have matured in my credit/spending outlook, or if I just know I wont be approved for squat yet, so I am psyching myself out.

I dont know..

I feel incredibly releaved with this BK, In total we wrote down half a million dollars, of which the IRS was over 300k.  Our actual reason for teh BK had nothing to do with spending habbits, credit missuse, or anything like that it was far more to do with the fact I owed the IRS from years and years ago, and the snowball effect from penalties and interest pushed my debt to a point I could never repay,  I found out it was possible to BK IRS debt under certain conditions, of which the vast majority of my IRS debt met.  We actually considered reaffirming everything, then after realizing it wouldnt matter, every cc would close our account any way, and outside of the cars we would have nothing but payments to show for it) we opted not to.

Good for you! I started the rebuild process while in my last 2 years of CH13 and I have 4 cards - all have a zero balances.  But I am more interested in building my net worth.  I am fortunate enough that I don't NEED any credit right now.  I have a 13 year old car that is running (with very minor issues here and there), a great job with a great salary (which will be increasing soon!).  My main goal is to accumulate one year of living expenses in a savings account.  Once I do that, I'll apply for a auto loan.

Focus on having a positive net worth.  Credit can wait, in my opinion.

FICO Score 8 as of 07/23/18

Re: Since Discharge, I have noticed my attitude, and behavior towards credit/spending has changed

I felt that way too, fulltime. I did feel relieved and free, but I had zero desire to app. Some of it was not wanting to jump right back in and repeat history, I think. We learned to buy what we needed with cash, and learned what we had been buying just due to want. After six months to the day from our DC weirdly enough, I just all of a sudden said to myself, "It's time," and started the rebuilding process. Good luck with your journey! Smiley Happy
