Yeah I would definitely wait till you are close to 700 before applying for PenFed...  I just got their Gold card last week with a $2500 SL... after I opened a savings account with them in early April after discharge.

 

MyFICO (v8) showed EQ as 677... but PenFeds approval email said it was 696... and I read that they pull FICO 9 which would explain the differences.
