Amex Plum Card Approval & Update

Hello everyone,

I decided to apply for Amex Plum Card and was approved on 07/04/2022. I had only been an authorized user with Amex for 1 year prior. When I applied they did do a hard pull of my Transunion file. So here are my results:

On 07/04/2022 I applied to:

Plum Card - no preset limit

Lowes Amex - $3000

Amex Business Credit card - $2000

Hilton - Denied : response approved for the max amount of cards at this time

Delta - Denied- response approved for the max amount of cards at this time

Update: Used Plum card on 07/15 and spent $499

07/15 - Amex annual fee billed $250

Statement cut off date 7/15

07/16 used $2500 for renovations

07/17 used $850 on electronics

07/18 - denied when I tried pay a licensing fee $160

Next I got an email telling me my purchase was denied because I need to make a payment. I am confused because my payment is not due until 08/09/2022. So am I capped at $4200 with the Plum card? I have other cards with bigger limits but this is my first business credit card. Help me understand this please.

Re: Amex Plum Card Approval & Update

¹st off, congratulations to you on the 3 approvals!

Currently I do not have any charge cards. Hope others can help clear up the operations of the presend limits.

I would think those prespend limits would have some sort of relationship to your spending habits charged for each account (.ie Amex Plum card). Make a payment and charge again. Rinse wash and repeat. I say this because I think time may help establish the ever changing spending power of this particular account.

Re: Amex Plum Card Approval & Update

Even NPSL have limit that usually grow as you build your profile with AMEX..  Many other Amex cards such as plat, gold, etc.. have hard limits on them as well that are placed after what AMEX sees as bad behavior or a risk.  Wish that said usually hard limits are removed eventually, but still based on many factors such as profile, relationship with amex, financial ability to repay, etc.  Having a NPSL card by no means gives you a blank slate to charge as much as you would like.  I would just pay it off then charge it up and rinse and repeat and your limit should go up.  i woud guess with your other AMEX business cards being fairly low limits this is what they are currently comfortable with extending you on spending power.

Re: Amex Plum Card Approval & Update

@mscreditfix  I concur with what the others are saying. American Express charge cards have no preset spending limit. With that said, they don't have an unlimited spending limit either. It seems to me that Amex is not comfortable with such a large spend as soon as you opened the card. It might even be a computer that is making this decision to deny additional charges. It's probably just a case of self preservation on Amex's part to be cautious with a new card account. My guess is, once you pay this balance your card will be ready to use again. Then, more than likely Amex will be less restrictive of your account as time goes on. For example, I have Amex Green. I use it every day on everything. But if I went into a jewelry store and began making some large purchases, the same fate would await me.

That's the way Amex charge cards work, especially in the first six (6) months. You never know what their internal spending limit is. It changes. You need to proceed cautiously and gradually with it. That's one of the reasons I no longer have an Amex charge card.

Re: Amex Plum Card Approval & Update

Well thank you all so much for your insight. I am just happy to be apart of the Amex family. I admit that the rep from Amex made me feel like I am on top of the world with my new cards and that was quickly shot down lol. But I am back to living modestly and I will take care of these cards and watch them grow!
