I keep getting emails from AAA telling me that I am pre-approved for their Travel Advantage credit card. It provides a reference number that I can enter into the application form but I wonder if this is just an electronic version of a mailer or something more likely to be approved just because it's an e-mail?
Reference numbers are primarily a marketing technique to allow the issuer and the 3rd party (if they use one) that they worked with to organize and manage the campaign to assess how well (or poorly) it worked including the percentage of targets who responded, their demographics, and approval/denial outcomes.
I'd view it as being more relevant that you got a preapproval than that you got it via email vs USPS mailer. While not ironclad guarantees actual Comenity preapprovals tend to be pretty solid assuming there hasn't been a major change in your credit profile like for example multiple applications for credit or large jump in reported utilization within the last 3 months or so.

If they called it a preapproval, it's probably a preapproval. I have that card, and it's a good card.
