Re: AMEX 3X Denied

This is all quite confusing.  Could an AMEX expert please provide a synopsis on the AMEX card or cards and requesting CLIs?  I think this would all help many of us.

First, you can only get one 3X CLI on any card every 180 days after the very first one you get.  If you tried in March and were declined you need to wait 90 days before you can try again.  You can't get CLIs on two cards at the same time.

Thanks for the info, Irish.  I have saved it in a Word document concerning AMEX 3X increased.

RE: OP, you requested a CLI in march on card two. I'm guessing that they're using that as your last "increase" date, meaning that you shouldn't be able to apply again until September.

I was denied an increase on card two in March.

Then you can't apply again until sometime in May.  When was the last time you successfully received a CLI that you requested?

We are in the process of rewriting the Amex 3X guide that is a sticky.

It was time to ask for my 3X increases (supposed to be soft pulls) for the 2 AMEX cards in my possession.  Interestingly, I got the 7-10 day message on both.  This has never happened to me before.  Guess I am about to learn a new lesson in the game of finance.

I was denied an increase on both cards. Here is the reason given for both: "We cannot increase the credit limit of a Card within six months of increasing the credit limit on another American Express Card."  It was 182 days ago when I received the increase on my first American Express card, so that reasoning doesn't wash.

The second card was offered to me in late March; as soon as I received and validated the card, I asked for an increase and was denied for the same reason.  I thought it was actually because a CSR encouraged me to apply for an increase on the first card about 6 days early (that was also denied).

I am not sure whether to call and find out what is really going on and just let it go.  I really don't need an increase, just wanted to play the 3X game, and it’s the principle.  I really would like to know how they came up with that reasoning.  What do y'all think.

If I understand correctly, you got a CLI around October 8, 2014, then a new card in March, asked for CLI and the denial said you didn't wait 6 months, today you tried with both cards and got the same message.

Can you confirm if the CLI date? From what I read you need to wait 180 days after CLI approval and 90 days after denial, and the clock is not reset if you ask before the right time. So maybe there is a problem with last CLI date.

On my first card I received the first CLI on October 16, 2014.  Then on March 24, 2015 I received AMEX card 2.
Later in March, I was speaking to an AMEX rep about another matter and she suggested I go ahead and ask for the 3X CLI on card 1.  That request was denied:  "We cannot increase the credit limit of a Card within six months of increasing the credit limit on another American Express Card."   A CLI had not been added to another card (thoiugh I did receive another AMEX card), so I went on with my plan to ask for the 3X CLI for Card 1 on the 181 day after the last CLI on October 16, 2014.  As it was, I did not ask for the increase until the 182 day.
For card 2, I asked for an increase shortly after I activated the card and was denied:  "We cannot increase the credit limit of a Card within six months of increasing the credit limit on another American Express Card."
Again, I decided to go with the plan of asking for an increase on the 181 day after October 16, 2014, for both cards.  Well that plan backfired and I was denied an increase on either card:  "We cannot increase the credit limit of a Card within six months of increasing the credit limit on another American Express Card."
Either I goofed up some way, or AMEX is changing it's policy.  Please tell me how I goofed up.  I know already from Irish that I should not have asked for increases to both cards at the same time.  Anything else?

The last time I was successful in obtaining a CLI for AMEX Card 1 was on October 16, 2014.  Never have received an increased for AMEX Card 2.

Then you should ask for your CLI in 1 of your cards at or later than April 14, 2015, that's your 180 day after last CLI approval. You need to decide if you want your CLI on card 1 or card 2.

Next time you can try the other card. Also, after 13 months with a card, you can transfer limit to the other, so people try to ask for CLI that gives them the most increase and then transfer some limit (when the card is old enough) to balance the cards and try the 3X CLI again.

Good luck, I hope you get your CLI.

I would call back door number for credit analyst or EO for clarification or to recon. Good luck!!!
