There is more to it than just a set number, right now I have 45k in exposure and no further request has been made. Having said that I'm happy where I'm at and have no intention of poking the bear any further.
How long did you wait to resubmit again?
My DL Reserve has been above $35k. Once a preset spending limit on my Platinum went away, I asked last week for a CLI to $50k and received it instantly online. They did not ask for any income verification or FR. Every case must be individual. Now I've had the DL account for many years and a $40k CL on my card in 2007 may well have been higher in constant dollars than a requested $50k CL today so maybe AMEX didn't care about a $10k increase since the CL has already eroded through inflation over the last 16 yrs.
kind of late to this but keep in mind a IV is different than a FR. I recently asked for a bump on my Everyday Preferred from the SL of $20k to $35k. They approved me to $30k but wanted bank statements to possibly approve the whole requested amount. I ignored the request and just kept the $10k bump they did give up to the $30k limit.

I ended up getting an increase of $19,500 to a credit limit of $34,500

How do you ask for an increase on your charge card? My gold card has no preset spending limit but a pay over time limit of $25,000

Did you get that because it is what you asked for or is that what they offered you?

That's what I asked for. I went right for $34,500
Sorry I wasn't clear.. I asked for a CLI on my DL Reserve after they reinstated the NPSL on the Platinum AMEX because they won't entertain any CLIs for other cards when there is a preset spending limit on a charge card.
When I had a high credit utilization on other cards they dropped my POT from 35k to 18.5k where it stands today. I have POT turned off because I don't plan to pay interest in the future. I do have a big upcoming IRS payment and checked the spending power for $40k and it said approved so the POT limit doesn't necessarily reflect your card's spending ability. I would not worry about growing your card's POT limit which I don't believe you can request. Best wishes!
