In late 2013 I got a AMEX BCE with a credit limit of 2k. After 61 days I was approved for a credit limit of 6k and then again after 180 days I was approved for 18k. I flipped a house during the summer of 2014 and put alot of expense on the card. I always paid it off and never missed a payment. I still use it frequently for expenses that are not covered by the rotating categories that my Discover IT and Chase Freedom cover. It is now time to request a new credit limit and I am wonder whether I should go for a 2x limit of $36k or a balls to the wall 3x limit of $54k? I do not want the dreaded FR or 4506-T situation so I am wondering what is the optimal credit line to request? I would be happy with a credit limit of $25k but playing it safe would not be fun.

Some people was asked to send the tax form even though they did not ask for a full 25k, so there's no way to know. But if i was you, I would apply for another card, you will have more credit and less chance of being asked for the tax form.
Why don't you want to send in the 4506-T?
(this is a relevant leading question because you are likely at $36k and with 99.999% certainty at $54k to be asked for it)
and to be clear, this is NOT a Financial Review. This version of the 4506-T is income verification only.
No balls, no blue chips. Go for the whole wad.
Im lazy and dont want to send in any forms. My income is true but I just want a big CL without any of the headache
Most members wimp out and go for $24,500 because it's short of the $25k likely 4506-t threshhold.
But you, well, with a handle like BigSnacks, well, you know, we expect big things from you ![]()
$54 is a big CL
Amex clearly likes the 3x CLI so why stop at $18k, right? Does anyone know if the AMEX 3X CLI Guide talks about this?
Do you really need a single card with 54k of credit? Amex will certainly ask some questions and require income verification and to be honest they have every right to do so if you are asking them to extend that type of credit. If you really want that much credit then send in the requested documents, although I do not know if amex will give you the full amount requested even with the documents, but they may counter offer. If you are willing to send in the requested documents then why not go for the full amount, since the worst they can say is no. If you are not willing to send in paperwork I would not ask for 2-3xs the CLI and instead would go for an amount that would get you up near 25k. They still may ask for verification, but I think the chances would be lower. In the end you can always refuse to provide the documents and likely all they will do is deny your CLI.
54k does seem like a huge line, not sure if I'd attempt it. And I've had good luck with Amex: 30k line on my old blue cash and overall 40k exposure.
