AMEX Freeze + Blacklist Question

Decades ago I burned AMEX. Don’t remember amount. $5K-$20K range.

I Currently Have EX Frozen.

I just applied online. (Aug. 2018)

They cited the reason for decline as the EX credit freeze. Please get a EX pin and call us to continue.

So this is a both hypothetical and niché question, forgive me for asking for speculation.

Does not citing past relationship for the decline (only the credit freeze was cited for the decline and they offered a remedy to continue the app by unfreezing EX) sound hopeful?

We know it is well traveled ground that they do not bother with a credit pull if you remain blacklisted. Hence the question.

Thank you all very much.

Re: AMEX Freeze + Blacklist Question

I burned AMEX 10 years ago with a charge off and recently in December was pre approved for a AMEX gold and the card even states I was a member since 2008.... Now with the card I have No Pre Set spending limit and a $25,000 Pay over time limit...... If it's been that long I say unfreeze and give it a shot.....

Re: AMEX Freeze + Blacklist Question

Amex usually has a 10-20 cycle depending on when someone burns them. I would unfreeze EX and see if they do a pull. If they do, that means you're off the blacklist. If they don't and just return a denial, then you're still on it. If they cited the EX freeze to decline, then it looks to me that you may be off the blacklist.

Re: AMEX Freeze + Blacklist Question

Echoing previous posts, you should give it a shot. I'm also blacklisted with AMEX, and I can tell you that even with a freeze on all my reports, they always decline me based on past relationship. The freeze won't stop them from checking their internal records. If you're blacklisted, you can put a triple freeze on them, and you'll still be declined. I think you have a chance at getting an application in, at least. Best of luck!

Re: AMEX Freeze + Blacklist Question

Thank you all for the thoughtful replies.

As a backstory I froze EX and they are putting me thru it to unfreeze. Declining my pin, not verifying my perfectly accurate I.D., also declining I.D documents via their internal PDF system. I will hold on AMEX until after new anticipated credit freeze laws in Sept. 2018. See if that is simplier. My only option now is documents via regular mail like Barclay.

You don't have to do the PIN verification or any of that BS if you unfreeze EX yourself, and then you call Amex to let them know they can pull credit directly without all those hurdles. I've done this both ways and it's much smoother to call the lender once you lift your own freeze.

Re: AMEX Freeze + Blacklist Question

BTW, you can lift the freeze for good or just temporarily. So if you want, you can set a future date for the freeze to activate again so you don't have to bother with it. Set the freeze for a couple of days later, and you'll be all set.
