AMEX Gold Card App

I was logging into American Express website an was pre approved for the Gold card with 60k MR for 4k spend. I have been with American Express since 2011 and did not know if they still so SP approvals still.

If you're already an existing AmEx cardmember (i.e. not new) then the likelyhood of an approval is typically SP.  It's not always 100% guaranteed, but if you search around in the Approvals subforum (or this section), it should provide a plethora of data points on those specific outcomes.

When I applied for the Gold card last November it was a soft pull for me.  I think as long as your other account has printed it's first statement it ends up being a soft pull for almost everyone on all other Amex applications. 

So far I have 5 Amex cards and only have gotten 1 hard pull.

5? Thought you could only have 4, I have 4 and I called and they told me on the phone I could not apply for anymore, I have a good relationship with amex, have kept most of my cards at zero, only card I use is my Hilton aspire

I have more than 10 (charge cards & revolvers combined - personal / biz).

The 'soft' guideline is typically ~5 revolvers, but there's quite a few folks with more than 5 (excluding charge cards).  That said, it's profile specific.

If you did the preapproval site then it is a soft pull until you accept the card

No, it's almost always a soft pull from beginning to end. But like Fin said there's always a possibility of a hard pull. It happened to me once.
