The sign up bonus is nice. However, does it fit your spend?

If you travel a lot you should go ahead and pull the trigger.

Think you just answered your own question here. The only way I see it being worth it is if you already have a redemption in mind for the MR points via SUB that make swallowing the AF worth it. With all that said I still wouldn't do it

Re: AMEX Platinum Pre-Qual

Really it depends on what you value. For a lot of people they value MR at $.02 pp, so that's a nice $2000 in travel. I value them closer to $.01 (I fly as an airline employee so need hotel points, not miles). Still that would be $1000 in benefits for $550, so basically doubling your money. On top of that you get the Saks credit. If you get the card now and only keep it one year you can still get it 3x, so that's $150. Sure you might never shop at Saks but I guarantee they have at least one product you use that is the same price you pay elsewhere that you can stick up on. For me it's facial soap. As for the Uber credits you can figure up how many times a year you spend at least $15 on Uber and count that in your return as well. I consider it worth $100, some people would be able to count it as the full $200. So you're looking at at anywhere from $1150 to $2350 in value from the card for $550. I consider that an excellent return.

I, much like you, got the card for the sign up bonus and thought I would just dump it after a year. After 3 months of having the card it's the one you would most have to pry out of my grubby little hands to give up.

The credit does not work at Saks Off 5th, however, you can buy a physical $50 gift card from Saks Fifth Ave and use it at Saks Off Fifth or the outlet stores.

Re: AMEX Platinum Pre-Qual

Ok and I’ll get statement credit for this?
Is it safe to buy a gift card with a Amex card ?
I read they don’t like it

Re: AMEX Platinum Pre-Qual

For the Sak's credit you can purchase a gift card IN STORE and it will trigger it, but apparently you cannot purchase one online.  At least that's what I understand.  I could very well be wrong.

And yes.  You get a statement credit so you also pick up MR for the purchase and I always go through a cashback portal.  Rakuten had 10% back earlier this week when I placed my order.

Re: AMEX Platinum Pre-Qual

The Uber Credit can offset the cost for a lot of people.

All that said, after you've done your year (to stay in Amex's good graces), it really.

However to me the real value of the card is in the lounge access - Delta and Passport more than Centurion. It makes travel far more bearable. If I didn't travel enough to justify the cost of the card, I wouldn't keep it.
