AMEX Pre-qualify Denial/Approval odds

Today was around my 3rd submitting info in AMEX's prequal site over the last year or so and I am still getting the "We could not find any offers that match". I really don't understand why. Is it because my Experian file is locked? Didn't think that would effect a soft pull. My credit file is solid - Fico8 Exp 787, Eq 719, TU 752. Utilization is 6% with $97k in credit lines. How reliable are my approval odds and why do I keep getting denied offers? Should I just roll the dice and apply? I am looking for both personal and a business card. Was going for personal first, then business. I want to take advantage of AMEX's awesome rewards and travel benefits. Any advise would be appreciated!

You'll likely have to unlock in order to see prequal offers.

yes, you'll need to unlock your file

what I would do:

Unlock/Unfreeze EX + TU

find the card you want

look for the apply with confidence language and simply apply.

If approved you'll be told you can accept and you can take the offer, the card and the hard pulls Ex + TU. If you decide you don't want it, simply decline the offer.

If you're not approved, there's no HP, no harm.

You won't be told the CL until you accept the offer, however. But you will be told if you are approved without a HP.

Yes, you have to unlock to view a potential offer. Keep in mind, they have generally been double pulling EX and TU if you find a pre-approval and decide to give it a whirl.

Thanks everyone for the responses. Didn't think my locked files would apply for soft pulls too. I'll give it a shot.

It's my understanding that soft pulls are only allowed on locked files with a pre-existing relationship.   Once you become a member, then AMEX can SP you every other day like they do the rest of us.

Oh locked files affect soft pulls alright. The only time they don't is if you already have a relationship with a lender. They can get around freezes. But for new lenders you have no relationship with, yes, a freeze keeps them from doing a SP.
