TL;DR - Applied for Delta AMEX Gold. Declined. Called for recon (see below for rationale). The first rep took my info and transferred me to new member services, and that guy then said "Okay, yes, you are eligible for a manual review." What? Eligible for a manual review? I've never heard of such a thing. Confused, I asked if he was the one who would do that and if he'd like to have some context to go with the denial, and he said "No. I will submit this for manual review." I don't know if this is a good thing or his way of saying "Look, this is my last call of the night, and I really don't want anyone pissed off at me, so I'll just slide this into File 13." Meanwhile, the application status has changed from "Declined" to "In Progress" ... So I guess someone is doing something somewhere? Context follows:
In the rebuild process. I got all the crap off my credit report, and scores are now reporting about 680-690 FICO 8 across the board, with Care Credit and Discover reporting 4% utilization for the last 2-3 months. Soooo since I fly Delta all the time, I applied for the AMEX Gold Skymiles. They declined me. One major reason, according to Experian's dumb computer, is my loans not being paid off rapidly enough, This is easily explained away because I'm in the Public Service Loan Forgiveness thing, so my payments are about $800 lower than they should be. Repayment is based on my income, and the full balance will be discharged in two years. FedLoan even has a letter for me to provide to mortgage lenders in case they're concerned about it. Anyway. DTI is 11%, cheap rent, 50-60k income.
What was the reason for denial ?
Decline -> progress means it will probably take about 4-5 days and it will either change back to decline or approved. I remember when I looked at the page daily.
Also, if you are rebuilding and trying to get your foot in the door with AMEX, I recommend the Green Card, that is where I started the underwriting guidelines are SOOO different for charge cards vs credit cards.
But AMEX will grow with you !!
