Good evening everyone!
Got an amazing offer for the personal amex gold, 100k points, 20% back. Applied and was denied due to the following reasons:
Too many inquiries (11) Utilization too high (1%)
Credit limits are too low (9k) Length of time since first account too short (4 years)
Zero late payments or any negative marks of any kind, 86k income. 757 Experian score. TU and EF mid 750's although they only looked at the Experian.
I 100% agree 11 is a lot of inquiries, so after getting off the phone with someone rude on the reconsideration line who basically said he'll submit for reconsideration but doesn't see the point if nothing on the report changes, I called Experian and ended up getting 5 inquiries removed.
So now with my 6 total inquiries I still have to wait 3-5 business days before I know if the gold will get approved, I apply for the Hilton Aspire.
Also denied for the same reasons even though my Experian file updated to the lower number of inquiries.
I wait another day, then enter the prequalification information, every time I had done this previously it said unable to prequalify you for any cards, but this time it gave me offers for the platinum, delta, and all the hilton cards except the Aspire. I say might as well have something, so I apply for the prequalified Hilton Surpass card.
Again Denied. This time the only reason given is because I was denied for a different card within 30 days, and I would need to wait another 30 to reapply. Regardless of the truth it seems like they're just making up excuses to deny me at this point as I've been trying to get a card with them for the past two years with no success.
I'm thinking about trying my luck at the Blue Business Plus, but I'm not sure if the 30 days after denial on the personal side carries over to the business side, and really don't want to risk the hard pull since there's no soft pull for business cards.
After this debacle I just went to get the Barclays Red Aviator Card to get the easy SUB and was instantly approved for that.
Any advice on how to deal with Amex is appreciated, probably patience being the number one issue.
Cheers
Lenders don't like to see too many recent inquiries. Over 2 recents, denials should be expected. App sprees tend to not fare very well.
What are the dates of your inquiries? When was the most recent CC/credit accounts opened?
Your scores should be higher with low util, and some years of good credit history. That tells me your inquiries are 1) all/mostly recent within a year and spread out across bureaus. That # of inquiries, assuming they weren't from something like an auto loan, etc, may be viewed by lenders as excessive credit seeking behavior, something lenders find risky.
Either that or your credit history is young or there is something bad on it.
I would wait 90 days and apply for anything in the meantime.
DON'T WORK FOR CREDIT CARDS ... MAKE CREDIT CARDS WORK FOR YOU!

I totally understand their risk mitigation given your DPs.
I closed a card over a year ago and still in pop-up jail lol not bothered, I'm over the "gotta have an AMEX" phase

Doing yourself more harm than good. Not sure how you got those inquiries removed as they are factual. With that said Amex knows your credit report and application history with them already and stored away in their DB along with pre-quals and all that information. They really aren't sensitive to inquiries maybe just for new people as have had 20+ before on Experian and have gotten additional cards with them but already was a 30+ year old member so not quite the same.
What was your utilization on your other card or cards? Have you been seeking credit other than AMEX in last few months aggressively being HP's whether removed or not and new accounts approved or not?
Amex doesn't hate you it just doesn't like your or anyone else with the same credit profile. As you stated wait it out and you're good.
