@DigitalNY wrote:Some are saying that Discover has a real long memory, but I had the complete opposite experience. I had a $3500 charge off (the full credit limit of the card) with Discover which was never paid and I fully expected that the only way I'd ever be able to get another Discover card would be repayment.
Within 30 days of the original debt falling off my reports I got a preapproval online and figured.. what the heck.. lets try it. Completed the application and got an instant approval for $5k with a 675 TU score. Never, ever in a million years would I have expected an approval with a decent credit limit.. especially a limit higher than they had charged off previously!
You are definitely an outlier and/or slipped through the cracks somehow. lol. They're not usually that forgiving.

I figured that might be the case. I've had a few weird (freakishly amazing) outcomes that I didn't expect when it comes to credit. Sometimes it almost seems like the FICO scoring model and creditor AI algorithms have a 'luck' variable, lol.
Either way, I'll take it.. can't complain!

Why? What is so great about Discover? It is basically a national credit card not international and the 5% cashback is only great in the first year when they match after that it equals many other cards out there or is worse. Is there something I am missing here?
Disc+
over was my smallest of 3 CC debts but the one who pushed me to BK after filing suit. Lost a job and got behind without ever catching back up. I burned them for somewhere between $2k-$3k (my memory is fuzzy) and filed a couple years after they filed suit. I waited 3.75yrs after discharge to try with them again and got in with a $400 secured card. I'm far from perfect but would like to think I'm a lot better with cards now than I was back then and my Discover is now $1800 unsecured. I use them every day for nearly all my transactions as if they were debit cards. If I don't have the money in my checking account I don't spend it. I do tend to think they treat BKs a bit better than COs from the DPs I've seen but I really only have anecdotal evidence of that and despite the BK I was over 7 yrs past DOFD when I tried getting back in

I don't think anyone is claiming they are the best for acceptance internationally or have the best rewards programs. They do have a few things going for them though imo.

What's wrong with that? If you need to travel internationally, use a different card during your trip. I don't see the issue. Except for those folks who think having more than 1 credit card with different rewards/fee structures is "too complicated". From your sig I assume you're not one of those people. I'd expect that comparing airline tickets prices online and making connecting flights is "too complicated" for those same folks anyway so I doubt it affects them.
Keep in mind the very nature of this thread means we're talking about credit profiles with recent BKs and COs. When my scores were in the toilet I considered myself lucky to get the Discover it. Now I no longer use mine because the categories overlap non-rotating rewards I get on other cards. (Who needs 5% on gas/groceries/Amazon for just ONE quarter out of the year??) But I still think they are a great company and if they ever come out with a card that interests me I will apply right away.
Discover actually filed a lawsuit aganist me back in 2018 - im now back in with them. ( I did pay off my debt tho)
