how old is the collection? you should be able to send a debt validation letter to the collection agency and see what happens
I had 8 unpaid collections, 2 paid collections, 7 additional baddies, probably about 6+ INQ and Cap One Lates (as early as Jun 2013) and I was still approved. It's hard to say for AmEx. I have a small itsy-bitsy limit, but hey... my toe is in the door.
To add to that, my scores were in the low 630s. Good luck to you
I ended up getting the AmEx Everyday Card
Collection about a year. Shady med collection company. Lots of complaint about failure to notify before reporting. Actually an article in my local news paper about the company being fined for just my situation. Have reached out to feds to get in on deletion and restitution. But slow process. I'm a stay at home mom and my husband always got the cards. After this problem with the collection, I've been more proactive in my personal credit. When I would check my credit from time to time it would be around 760. After the collection hit 630, now in the 660-670 range... Also reported a hippa violation, so pretty much making work for the lawyers!

I'm a bit confused. Is the collection reporting just on yours, your husband's, or both? Are you using his income for apps or your own? I work from home, but use my income and not my boyfriend's so I don't have to worry about them questioning my income since he makes twice as much as I do.
Collection just on mine. Other than joint car loans, and me using my husbands cards, my credit is fairly new. I have been applying for cards on my own. But I use my husbands income. Income verification has never been a problem, only the darn collection.

Thanks for clarifying. I admire you for building a credit profile on your own. Although I could prove household income close to $120k, since only 1/3 of it is mine, I just don't bother. I think that you stand a great chance of getting the Amex ED and depending on income probably the BCE. There are other co-branded Amex cards like the BBVA NBA card or the Macy's Amex (but you have to have the regular card first). Are there other cards you are interested in? I personally love Synchrony, but Walmart and Sam's are my 2nd and 3rd homes. You didn't mention if you have Discover. That could be a possibility since it is a medical collection and not a credit card or loan collection.
