American Express Approval Odds

Thinking about applying for an American Express card and want some suggestions / guidence on which card would give me the best odds of approval.

Scores across the board are 708. UTL is 30%. Oldest account is 12 years and AAoA is 1 year 10 month on my Experian report. There is no late payments, collections or anyother negative info on any of my reports.

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Also, the Pre-Qualifier doesn't show any offers.

Re: American Express Approval Odds

How many inquiries on Experian? How many new accounts in the last 12 months?

Generally the easiest cards to get started with American Express are the Charge Card accounts (Green, Gold, Platinum). Many also suggest the Delta Gold, although I wouldn't necessarily recommend it unless you already fly Delta (I've got a Delta hub near me, and travel at least once a year so this is my go to card for most things). As long as you don't have a ton of new accounts recently, I would think they would approve you for one of the charge cards. Good luck in your decision, I love Amex!

Re: American Express Approval Odds

AmEx is pretty lenient these days. People with even less than 1 year of credit history are getting approved for some of their cards. Anyone in high 600's should be good. Go for it!

Re: American Express Approval Odds

I say go for it.  I have noticed many posts in the myFICO forum of people with mid to high 600 scores being approved.  I am supposed to be gardening but these posts inspired me to apply last night and I was approved today for the Hilton Amex.  This was def a great feeling considering I had applied for the Hilton Citi card two months ago and was denied.  (I was denied because of a collections account - which has now been paid and removed from all of my reports, and because I had too many new inquiries).

They only gave me a CL of $1.4k which is a bit low but hey I have my foot in the door.  This is my first time applying for an Amex and I now have my first card.. I am def happy.

Good luck!!

Since they lost the costco account, they seem to be more lenient as far as applying people with mid 600 scores. I am seeing more and more amex approvals here everyday.

I was denied by them several times last year for both charge and revolving cards. End of december i was barely approved for a bce with $1K limit. Used it a lot and paid it, and in mid january, i was denied again for Delta skymiles gold. Finally last friday night, after 3 months of usage  of my bce, i was instantly approved for Amex PRG, Green Card, and Delta skymiles gold with $1K limit, and have a pending app for Delta platinum due to 5 day rule between 2 revolving account apps. My fico EX is 641 as per Amex, as of the day of application, and i have high uti right now, with no baddies except one judgement from 2010. Income around $60K

The pre Qualifier has never showed me anything on any of my approvals either. So if it shows, it is pretty solid, if it does not, dont take it as you will not be approved for anything.

Good luck and keep us updated here if you decide to apply.
