American Express Black List

I am currently on the Amex Black List after a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy from 2011.  Unfortunately, Amex was included in that Chapter 7 to the tune of approximately 22 Thousand.  Since that time, I am over 800 with all 3 bureaus, have a mortgage at 2.875 percent, own my vehicle free and clear, and over 100 Thousand in available credit between 6 different cards.

I took a shot applying for an Amex Platinum card (which is what I used to have) and I got the auto rejection, due to a past closed account.  I called their customer service after reading many of these forum posts that have discussed repaying the loan to be removed from the black list.  Their customer service rep told me that repaying the loan post bankruptcy is not an option for them.  Is that a new policy?  They also said that there is no set time line when you may be eligible to reapply for their cards.  They did give me an address where I can explain my situation in writing to them, which I have never seen as an option on here before.

At the end of the day, despite the hardship that I had to go through and a chapter 7 being my only conceivable option, I accept the fact that the 22K hit that Amex took was on me.  I just wish there was more clarity on how to get a second chance with them to show your worthiness.

Does anyone have any success stories, timelines, or the ability to share any ways on how to get removed from the black list? I look forward to hearing from anyone with some insight.

The  best answer is TIME . They will eventually let you back in but it's takes a number of years and sometimes 10+.

i certainly would not pay 22K just to get the platinum card from them .

22k isn't a small burn it might be 20+ years if ever let back in with AMEX.  many other lenders to give you credit try every year until eventually they may let you back in if you want the card with them that badly.

I figured, I'd try yearly from this point.  I may submit something to them in writing as suggested by the rep.  It's literally the 1 hanging thing that im

trying to grab to get me back to where I was pre Chapter 7.

You paid $10k and they still deny you?  Was that your entire balance?

Rebuild started in 2014  -  $100k unsecured credit in 2017  -  $500k unsecured credit in 2024.

Be mindful that (if I understand correctly) there is very specific wording reps have to use when a debt is not collectible under federal law. It wouldn't surprise me if a cryptic statement from them is supposed to mean "we can't require you to pay us anything, but we also can't stop you" or to that effect. In my case, after asking many questions they told me the amount of my chargeoff that was included in Ch 7 - something silly, under $1,500. Then I asked them what the remittance address was. I mailed a check in that amount to said address, which they deposited and (weeks later) I got a letter stating the closed account was paid-in-full. The last 5 x digits on their letter matched my old card number. Since then, the "unable to approve because we closed your prior account" has not appeared on denial letters. Not sure any of this pertains to your situation, but I hope it helps? My understanding is that it means I'm off the blacklist, but they still won't approve me for anything...

Can't find anything conclusive here, either - other than random anecdotes posted around these forums or elsewhere...

Definitely agree, but my situation sounds slightly different in that I had to file Ch 7 due to reasons which had nothing to do with credit cards. Now, I feel like I'm applying for an upscale restaurant franchise - but being denied because someone thinks you took a $1 bill out of the register back when you worked at McDonald's in high school.

Obviously depends on a number of factors, but yes - especially for people who live near a Delta hub or otherwise like flying with them. Now we must rethink our priorities, due to partnerships that THEY chose...

Similar situation for me, as well - I've had little or no trouble getting approved with every other Major. But it would appear as though AmEx is only willing to work with, talk to, or approve existing customers. Does anyone on these forums work for AmEx, or maybe know someone who does - like a higher-up in an executive office?

Re: American Express Black List

My wait was about 25 years.

I opened my first account with them back in 1994 when I was young and dumb.  1998 I filed chapter 7 and they were included.  I recently started getting pre-approval offers from them, some 25 years later.  I had been denied with them up to about last year when I last tried because of the status of previous accounts with them.  Last week I bit and got approved for their Platinum with a $4k "Pay Over Time" limit with a 150k point bonus.  Given the amount of money I spend on travel, I was excited.  Annual fee was steep, but considering I already pay for Hulu live TV, use Uber on a regular basis, and my wife was paying for Walmart + already, the annual fee was not too painful afterall.  I did have some blemishes on my credit report from COVID, but last 5 years are good and clean.

I won't know if they'll deny me until a week and a half from now. I was told to wait 35 days. It was a 13.8k balance settled for 10.3k or so.

Prior to the COVID thing I flew Delta at least a dozen tines per year, however , I lost my Platinum card in my 2015 Chapter 13, and definitely missed having lounge access.  Given I was not in a 100% plan, and given AMEX got burned for something approaching thirty-grand, I figured it was much cheaper to simply buy a Sky Club member ship than to even think about a partial repayment to AMEX.  At this point, if I were to keep my Sky Club membership until I croak, I will still be WAY ahead of where I'd be if I paid them in full.  Yes, the Platinum card has other benefits beyond lounge access, but none which I cannot get from other non-AMEX cards.

Chapter 13:

  • Burned: AMEX, Chase, Citi, Wells Fargo, and South County Bank (now Bank of Southern California)
  • Filed: 26-Feb-2015
  • MoC: 01-Mar-2015
  • 1st Payment (posted): 23-Mar-2015
  • Last Payment (posted): 07-Feb-2020
  • Discharged: 04-Mar-2020
  • Closed: 23-Jun-2020
