Amex 3x CLI and Subsequent Amex Revolvers

Today I asked and got my 3x CLI from Amex for a BCE that was opened in Dec '17 for 1k SL. I am happy to move from that low amount because I was not sure if it was one of those credit steps cards that would not get a CLI for 5 months (I could not find any old emails indicating it if it were, so...) On their card offers page I am "pre-approved" for other revolvers and am interested in one or two other cards.

My question: if app'd and approved, does the fact that I got past the initial 1k SL indicate that a subsequent card won't start at that low level? I am planning to travel this summer and would like to get one of the cards that don't have any foreign fees and would really like to not start at that lower level again. I am itching to app one of them, but waiting until next month or Apr as I try to bring my util down a bit.

I read in other posts that it's best to wait until AT LEAST my credit line is above 2k to get another card so I don't get locked in at lower levels. I've also seen a lot of posters getting BCE, ED, Delta, and getting locked in at 1k each, which basically means no CLI on those for 180+ days. Would be better to wait and try then on the BCE to get another 3x, right?

Does anyone have any experience in a smilar situation that they could share? I don't want to take a HP for only 1k. Thx.

Some DP on the CLI:

EX is 688, 7 Inqs past 12 months, 5 cards, 4 store, a credit builder account (almost paid for) and 20% util.

edit: pushed thru over 3k since I got the card (70 days) but never carried a statement balance, so that may have helped get the 3x

Re: Amex 3x CLI and Subsequent Amex Revolvers

That's hard to say to be honest. Seems like you have better than a 50/50 chance because your scores suggest you'll get similar starting limits with any new app but at the same time they were wiling to increase your limit to 3X which not a lot of people with SLs like that get. But still if you're banking on getting a higher limit with a potential new card I'd wait til you crack at least the 700s before applying again to get a higher success rate with limits.

Here's hoping someone with similar experiences chimes in.

Re: Amex 3x CLI and Subsequent Amex Revolvers

I received my first BCE AMEX with a $500 limit 9/17 increased to $1k 11/17. Applied and approved for Delta Gold $2000 11/17. I decided to apply for Hilton Honors 1/2018 and was approved $5000. My scores are in the same range as yours 687 EX. I think it's worth a shot.  YMMV.

Re: Amex 3x CLI and Subsequent Amex Revolvers

I cold apped for the BCE back in October and was approved with a 2k limit. Did the same cold app for a Starwood card two months later and got a 1k limit.

On day 57 after I activated the BCE, I received the 3X CLI to 6k. I’ve maintained low balances and PIF for both cards since Day One and for the last month I’m shown as being preapproved for every card Amex offers on their site.

Literally five minutes ago I applied for and was approved for the blue Delta Skymiles card with a limit of 5k. I love these guys.

So yeah, in my experience they’ve shown to be very generous. My data points are: north of 730 across all agencies, AAoA about 13 months, five HP’s in the last year, and I kept my balance on both cards combined to less than $100 each billing statement. I’ll probably splurge a bit now that I’m in cahoots with them.

Best of luck to you!
