I'm considering applying for the Amex BCE (or perhaps the regular EveryDay) as my next card and is definitely one of my goal cards, but first wanted to get some advice on how realistic my chances are with my profile. I definitely want to keep growing my profile, but as I'm still in the recovery stages, I don't want to stall the progress I've made.
Current FICO scores:
EQ: 628 - 7 inqueries - AAoA 2 years
TU: 657 - 5 inqueries - AAoA 1 year
EX: 705 - 7 inqueries - AAoA 8 months
In late 2010 I went 30 day on 2 accounts and never paid them off. They where charged off eventually. No collections on them. Both of those are still on my EQ. 1 of them is on my TU, and somehow, they've been removed completely from my EX, which is why it's so much higher (and AAoA lower)
I also apped to Amex in May 2015, and was declined. They pulled EX and the reported score on their denial was significantly lower than now (~630, don't remember the exact number). Since then my score has obviously gone up, I have an auto loan, an additional Cap 1 card, and several CLI's on my 3 current accounts.
So given this info, would I have a good chance if I applied? Recon? Garden for a few more months? I don't need the credit as I never (no longer?) carry a balance, I just want to take the next step in the rebuilding process.
If you don't need it, don't get it.
If your EX is clean and you want the card, you will more than likely get it. EX is all they've ever pulled for me, even when I was "borderline" I never got a double pull.
Based on my experience with them, I would not call Amex INQ sensitive. They approved me for two cards with 14 INQ on my EXP, 50% of which were within 6 months. They are not known to do reconsiderations; they happen very rarely, but I would not call your ability to request a recon a guarantee.
Did you app yet?
I would echo that if you don't really feel you need it, there's no reason to get it. There's also no hurry -- if you feel gardening will help, then garden. The card isn't going anywhere, and if you apply when your profile improves, you'll see better terms/limit/APR.
If you aren't 100% sure just give it some time. Having said that, I don't think Amex is particularly new account sensitive. Plenty of people get approved with tons of inqs etc. I personally believe BCE is one of their easier cards to get but that is 100% just my speculation.
I applied a few minutes ago.
Instant approval with a $1000 limit. With my short history, I can't complain, and it gets my foot in the door to a card I'll use regularly.
Thanks for the advice, all!
