Amex CLI Denied Considering a Recon Cannot Find Number

I was approved earlier this month for the BCE. I let the first statement hit the other week it was for $180.00. I paid all but $20.00 and had some new pending charges on it. So, a few says later, I had $108.00 on the account and I paid that off (I currently have a 0 balance on the acct.) The following day I requested a CLI for 3x and it went to 7-10. I received the refusal letter and it says, "Your recent payments are too low in relation to the balance on your account." Not sure how paying $160.00 on a $180.00 balance is too low? I feel for this reason, I may be able to talk to them for a recon. I called the number on the decline letter and she said she would send it to the underwriters for a recon. Is there a number that I can call to actually talk to a credit analyst? I have searched on here, but I cannot find it.

AFAIK they don't recon...you just have to wait 90 days and try again.

This is correct. The only way they will consider it is if there was an error in the file at the time the attempt was made.

Okay thanks. Just thought it was worth a shot considering the excuse. Thought that may give me a chance.

Ok, that's a large first CL from AMEX. They probably want to see if you actually start pushing the limit before raising it. $200 doesn't quite push things Smiley Happy

90 days wait, unfortunately, but that's how AMEX works.

I will give it a try in 90. That was a week worth of charges and then they cut the statement. Wasn't going to run a new card up like that. To me, that would show bad useage if I gave a person a 6.5K limit and they ran their limit up in a week, but that's just me. I will probably put close to 1-2K a month and PIF for the next few months and try again. Thanks for the input!

Also, will a BT help in showing "useage" Or do they want to see new purchases?

Well, the amount you processed was only $200 before asking for the CLI, correct? $200 is a little light, $6,500 may be on the high side, but somewhere in the middle, and no one knows exactly where, there's a spend rate that is your regular daily spend, and if your 20 swipes per month only get to $1k, then $6,500 is a nice size line, while you show AMEX your charging and payment habits.

The CLI are easy enough to request through the on line tool, but the 3x CLI depends on the existing limit and where AMEX scores the cardholder for potential max limit. That max limit will climb only with showing good payment patterns, over a significant length of time.

The other issue to consider is, if you have any plans to get another 1 or 2 AMEX revolvers, then maximizing this card CLI may not help those other apps later. Leaving some room for other AMEX cards to have good limits is a strategy, a good reason not to max out any one revolver limit. My AMEX Delta Gold card was at $9k and came eligible for a 3x CLI in late May. I thought about going for $27k, but did not, and ended up apping for Hilton and SPG, getting each with $10k, and then asked for only a $3k CLI on the Delta card, to $12k. So I ended up with $32k overall, two new cards with bonus points, and no 4506-T request.
