Hi All! I've been a lurker 👀 on this forum for quite some time, I've gained so much knowledge and understanding of all areas credit wise. I want to give everyone their kudos for contributing ,making this arguabally the best forum on credit online. My only setback is I wanted to post a message and thought that I had to pay for a credit monitoring service first! 😂 (Didn't see 'register' 'till i clicked forum home)
Heres my dilemma,
I currently have an amex gold, and was looking for a revolver to add to my arsenal. On the pre-approval list I had HH Aspire and Marriot Bevy as some of the offers. I decided to go big or home and took a shot at the Marriot Brilliant. To my suprise it stated I was pre-approved and already froze my Exp so I was hoping for a SP card for more flexing. I went forward and after 10 secs or so, I was denied, with the only statement being, "Length of time you have been a customer with American Express is too short”. Now I know I just opened an account with them in Dec '22, however I've seen on the forum that people get 1 charge/revolver at the same time, or reps from them stating usually 3-6 months before apping again, and I know its all DP based and YMMV and all that, I really just thought I was in there!
I'm thinking of moving my talents elsewhere, considering NFCU (received a pre-app email for cashrewards), Chase, WF, or any other perky card rn... I'm just not sure contacting AMEX for a recon is in my best interest now. What do you think? Asking o great Credit gurus *bow
I have had a mixed profile for some time
but my DP are 801 exp, 771 tu, 765 eq,
5 inq, 4 were for 2 cars I got jun 2021
0 coll, AAoA 3y 3m, 0% Uti,
Please lmk if there is anything I'm missing or left out. Thanks!

Simple. When starting out start slow. The days of app sprees being a good idea are well gone. Be very selective with the cards you want. Is the marriott card really something you need (I have ton of travel cards and I have a tough time justifying the marriott card)? The aspire card has a sigificant AF are you gonna be able to utilize it to make it worthwhile? Frankly if you are into travel those are really not the types of cards I be looking at to build my foundation on. Come up with a game plan oh what cards you want and in what order. Diversify your lenders so you are not putting all your eggs in one basket. Manage your credit properly. The initial cards you get you want to be able to hold on to long term to help with the age of your accounts. Don't chase SUBs if you have a very thin file. Focus on the longer term and if you want travel redemptions look at how cards will work together long term according to your spending patterns. If you aren't looking to redeem for travel etc then look into cash back cards. The points game can be tricky and you really need to have a balance in a number of currencies to string together a vacation where you are not going significantly out of pocket.
it sounds like Amex was willing to approval a different revovler, just not the Bonvoy Brilliant just yet.
I wouldn't take it personally, try again in a few months. Maybe even after 6 months of having your Gold card.

It sounds like you were pre-approved, but locking your file just before the application, can be a recipe for disaster.
I don't mean to sound harsh, but in the future .."IF" you really want to be approved?, you are going to have to "risk" a HP.
You have to remember, a "HP" is not the sky is falling ..end of the world scenario.
BTW, Welcome to the forum.
So I understand this, your Experian credit file was frozen when you applied for the Marriott Brilliant? If you really want the card go ahead and call in for reconsideration.
Welcome to finally creating an account here, sorry you had to find out the hard way but I'll comment for anyone else later that you do not need to be a subscriber to a MyFICO paid service in order to register and participate in the forum.

Hey thank you so much for the response. The bonvoy brilliant isn't something I really need, but I did want to start accumulating with SUB + night awards. I plan on getting the Bonvoy Boundless with chase, then the bonvoy biz again with amex and start the stacking of points/nights. I have no travel cards/hotel cards so I was hoping to start that side of my credit journey. The aspire card has a sigificant AF, but nothing compared to 650 from brilliant /; Thanks for the overall advice bc I need to hear it. What do you consider a very thin file? I have 10 accounts but I know Im still in the beginner stage. I have a ton of quicksilvers, and was looking to WF active cash or freedom unlimited to get anything better than the 1.5/2%.

SInce you specifically mention intent to try for a (Chase) Boundless and then a (AMEX) Bonvoy Business I'll direct you to the link below as there are known guardrails meant to discourage applying for certain combinations of Marriott cards within a short time frame.

See the comment re: the limitations on getting marriott cards with both chase and amex. With travel cards the best cards tend to be the ones where you can get flexible points currencies that can go to a number of different travel partners. For example I rather a chase sapphire card with ultimate rewards points or an Amex card with member reward points way before I go for a hotel card. You also should be careful about timing. Wait until there is a good signup bonus because some of these cards are once in a lifetime cards others have a lockout of multiple years and also you have to worry about rules like 5/24 etc. It helps to identify your specific goals. Maybe locations you want to travel and see what airlines fly there and identify point currencies that might help you obtain the required award. Also look at hotels and see the point currencies and redemption rates etc. It takes awhile to build up point balances for trips but with some time and patience and a whole lot of flexibility you can pull it off.
