I've been eyeing a 0% BT card for a few months and decided to try for the Amex Everyday card. I recently paid down my balances quite a bit which caused my EX score to go above 700 again, but that wasn't good enough for an approval on this card when I tried today. I received instant denial.
Utilization was about 45% overall. Was this too high for Amex?
CK said approval odds were "Very Good"
No word on denial reasons yet. Amex site is not working. I called they stated wait for the letter first then call back if I have questions.
Any insight or thoughts would be appreciated.
Utilization absolutely is a major contributing factor.
You need to be below 30% and ideally less than 10% for the best offers, approvals, and maximim FICO scoring.
@Nstark,
Sorry to hear about the denial.. It is always best to keep utilization below 30%. Also, when deciding to apply for anything, don't go by CK scores and recommendations. Do you know what your real FICOs are?
Also, any baddies in your report or it is completely clean?
You should never app for credit or loans with utilization more than 30-35% . Some people still get approved but why take the risk ? with your score you wouldv been approved with a lower utilization . Just try again later when you get your balances down .
I agree with previous responders; apply again when your util is within in acceptable range.
I actually just applied for that very same card a about 3 days ago and got approved for it.

My fico scores were around 745.
AAoA is about 7.5 years and oldest account is 15 years. About 7-8 inquiries in each of my reports.
Income I put in 80k.
I'm 42 years old.
What people are saying about UT could be 100% correct. My balance to card ratio was around 9000/28000, so I was right around the 30% ratio. Just a tad over or so perhaps.
Amex gave me a 10k SL. Which will help immensely with paying off the rest of my CC debt.
I have a quick question for others if I may.
I did a dual app for another Amex card the same day, and the 2nd card was not approved immediately, they said they do a 5 day hold. Does anyone know if they will pull credit report again after 5 days, or will they use the same original pull? On the day of my 2 apps, they only pulled once.
I'm worried they'll do a new pull, and see all my other inquiries from that day. I did a pretty major app spree. I also applied for 5-6 other cards. So I kinda went overboard somewhat. ![]()

More than likely they'll use the same pull. Even if they do another, which is unlikely but could happen, those other inquiries won't be an issue. Did you get approved on those other applications?
Thanks Irish80 for your reply. ![]()
Yea for the most part I got approved on all of my apps.
Applied for the following...
Amex BCE got 10K
Cap1 Venture got 7.5K.
Cap1 QS got 5k.
Barclays NFL got 5K
Amazon got 2.2K
Another Amex, don't recall which one, got a 5 day hold message. Immediately called to find out what's up, and they said everything looks fine, they just always do a 5 day hold for dual apps like I did.
Chase Freedom - Decision pending for 7-10 days message. Called also and nothing's wrong, just need to look stuff over or w/e. I already do have a Slate with them with a 3.4 CL.
Citi forget which card, a good BT card, got DENIED.
I think they just don't like me. However, I did have a card with them opened in around year 2000, but about 8 years ago or so I had major financial problems and had to max that card out which had a 16k CL on it. I had to close it out to pay it all off, which I did and it got totally paid off about 3 years ago. I'm wondering if that's why I was denied? ![]()
B of A, same exact thing and story with Citi, used to have their CC, but on this one I got it up to around 5K and paid it all off and closed, about 3 years ago or so.
Other than the 2 denials, which I'm thinking may have been because of my old history with them, even though they both ended on positive notes. I dunno though.
So that was it. If I get that other Amex I applied for that would be incredible but not needed. As I totally got tons of new credit and more than enough BT's to work with.
I went from having around 28k limits, to almost 60k in limits now. ![]()
Very very happy with the results. I'm seeing a lot of inquiries the last couple of days but I have no need for any new cards for a long long time.

Congrats on the approvals. I'm pretty sure that the Citi and BoA denials were because of your past history. They both have long memories so it could be awhile before you can get back with them. Looks like both the Amex and Chase applications are going to be approved. I would call Chase again and follow up and not wait the 7-10 days. With Amex you can check the status with the link below and it will tell you which card you did apply for :-). Good luck
Wow that's awesome. ![]()
Thanks for the info. I was really wondering about all of that so you were very helpful.
Also thanks ALOT for that Amex link. I had been looking for something like that but had no luck finding anything.
So thanks for everything. ![]()
