Last night, I applied for the Amex Gold Card on their site and received a rejection. I had previously done preapproval scans where this card popped up, so I didn't think it would be an issue, but here we are.
I called the reconsideration line just now to find out why I was rejected. The reason he gave me was that the offer was not valid: the offer that was shown to me was not an offer that they could give, so I was rejected. I could apply again and there would be no reason he could see that I would be rejected.
That's nice, but my concern is if this will affect my Chase 5/24 slots. I was at 3/24, so my plan was to get the Amex Gold Card and, in a couple of months, CSP once I get a preapproval in my account (got CFU in Oct and have hit SUB qual). However, a rejection would count me at 4/24 (correct?), so my next card would have to be Chase for sure.
I questioned the man on the phone: did they do a hard inquiry on my account, so if I apply again, that would be a second hard pull to get this card? He said that there was no hard inquiry, and I'm not seeing one pop up (though I've heard Amex pulls are delayed?). I'm not sure if this is true though.
Has anyone had an experience like this? How will this rejection affect my Chase 5/24? I guess I can just wait until Chase seems ready to let me get the CSP. I have some big purchases to make (wedding planning), so I'm itching for a new SUB soon.
Hello @Anonymous , welcome to the forums.
When it comes to the Chase 5/24 restriction, that is in reference to the number of accounts opened within the last 24 months, not inquiries.
Thanks for the welcome and response!
That's great to know about the Chase 5/24 rule! I misunderstood when I read about it. Sometimes it's good to be wrong lol! I'm feeling a lot more comfortable at my 3/24 ![]()
You're most welcome and it never hurts to check with the community beforehand.
Now, can you expand a little further on the AmEx Gold card decline? You mentioned an offer that they couldn't honor. Was the offer something you obtained from another source vs. the AmEx website? Or, was it a referral link...possibly expired? When you click on the status of the application and view it, what specific reason does it cite (versus what the agent informed you)?
The offer was directly on the Amex site for the 50k SUB - no external links to get there. I didn't receive an email about the rejection, so no status number or info there. The immediate rejection had mentioned they'd send a reason by snail mail, so I'm curious as to what that might say.
That's interesting indeed. Check out the AmEx URL/link that I provided upthread. That should provide the information on the denial letter. On the upside, if there was no HP, then you should be good.
For giggles and grins I pulled up the site in incognito mode and had a Special Offer For You promo come up for the Gold card; 50,000 MR for $4K spend within 3 months.
I'd suggest you also go back and go to the site in incognito mode; if you get the 50,000 mile offer take a screenshot and then call AMEX again and if the CSR tries to blow smoke ask to speak to a supervisor. I think it's pretty arguable that use of incognito mode doesn't constitute a targeted promotion.

Incognito mode?!

The status check notification link says the following:
Sorry, your application cannot be accessed.
Please try again later.
