Amex Maximum Points Application Strategy

Hey All,

Let me know if this strategy is possible/smart/stupid...

I am interested in applying for both an Amex PRG and a credit card.  At the moment the pre-qualification page indicates 50K point sign up bonus for the PRG and 25K points for the Everyday CC.  What I was hoping to do is apply for both at the same time to only take the one HP.  I believe the 50K/25K are only for new members (not 100% about this).  Do you all think this will work?  My big concern is I don't want Amex to think I am shady (or more shady than I actually am, haha JK).

I am going to wait a few weeks before applying as EX hasn't yet updated a credit increase and a large paydown, so who knows if there offers will still be available.  Once I have these two cards I will be pretty much set for cards.

Thanks,

NB

What @redpat said.

People have been known to get one revolver and one credit at the same time. I don’t see anything shady about it. My biggest concern would be whether those SUBs will be available when you go to apply later.

I commend your strategy and recently got the PRG with the same offer. My strategy would’ve been the same but I was and still am unable to get the 25K Everyday Card offer to populate.

Re: Amex Maximum Points Application Strategy

Current EX Score 696 others are a few points lower, AAoA 10 years +, zero EX/EQ inquiries, 1 TU.  Chase $1,000/$10,000, PP 2% 0/8,000 (this was just raised from $2K, not yet reflected on EX), AU Chase 10K/30K, employee Amex Business Platinum & Gold (I am 99% this doesn't impact at all).  Income: $55K.

The shady comment was sort of a joke, but I think the idea of opening two browsers and hitting the offer buttons at the same time is a little suspect...  My preference is to call Amex and discuss, but that may not be advisable.

I had many years ago a personal Gold Card that I cancelled (didn't really understand the age of account thing) but really liked it. I called and am still able to get the new member bonus.  As far as preference I would rather start with the credit card, but it is hard to not jump on the 50K points.  From what I see the standard points for a new app at 15K for the credit card and 25K for the PRG.

That helps.  I would suggest to apply for the 25k ED card first and then apply for the PRG.  Since your score isn't above 700 I would expect a SL on the ED to range 3k - 6k.  The reason I say to apply for the PRG second is because their charge cards are easier to be approved for.  You should have no problem with ED approval anyway.  In addition, the 50K prg seems easy to get in incognito.

I would go for the double app too. I went PRG because that’s what I really wanted then went ED and was approved for 1k w 655 Fico, old charge off, and a late student loan payment within the last year. Let us know how it goes and good luck’

Re: Amex Maximum Points Application Strategy

I'm a preexisting amex member but I recently opened the Ameriprise Platinum, Ameriprise gold, and Delta gold credit card all on the same day.

Also fwiw the 50k offer is available to preexisting cardmembers.

If you ever intend to get a platinum, the optimal strategy would be to open the gold and Platinum at the same time, then after year 1 close the platinum and either see about upgrading the gold to a platinum for a bonus or closing it too and moving on to another platinum and gold for more bonuses. This way you get the SUBs from both cards and still get the upgrade bonus and of course some of these cards waive the fee for year 1.

Re: Amex Maximum Points Application Strategy

This is pretty much what I did last year.  I picked up these cards:

EDP 30K/$2K bonus

PRG 50K/$2K bonus

Green 25K/$1K bonus

I applied in that order one right after the other.  I opened three browser tabs so I could see the high offer on each, filled them out, and submitted.  Took me about 10 minutes.

If you're new to Amex, it will likely all be done from one pull from EX.  If you are already an Amex member, the trend lately is subsequent accounts aren't even getting any HPs.  This was the case with me.

Of course, that's not guaranteed.  Don't blame me if you get HP'd.

Standard offer on Everyday is 10k not 15, so 25k is amazing.

Yeah there seem to be varying levels of offers on some cards.  For example the ED standard no-tricks offer is 10K.  You can get a 15K offer pretty easily if you do stuff like delete cookies.  And if you hold your breath and the stars are aligned the right way you can get the 25K offer.
