Amex Pre-Qualified...

Hi all, I'm helping my parents on this amex applications because they have a trip coming up and would like to have either the amex gold or any cash back rewards from any issuers. Long story short, dad has just opened a Citi card last month (4/26/19) because there was no offer from amex at the time but there was an offer from Citi. However, there are 4 offers (gold, everyday, everyday preferred and BCE preferred) for him today including the gold that he wanted as well.

My question to the community is how likely for him to get approved for one of these offers?

His scores are TU733, EQ729, EX760, AAoA 1y1m, oldest account is 2y8m (he rebuilded but never had amex), UTI 9%

HP: TU6, EQ5, EX5

BofA opened 3/2018

Cap1 opened 7/2018

Disc opened 9/2018

Citi opened 4/2019 (could've been an amex but there's no offer from amex...)

Is he better off not applying at all or he might get approved?

Current status: Gardening as of 5/2019 Projected: TBD

Re: Amex Pre-Qualified...

He will be approved, especially since he's applying for a charge card and not a revolving credit account.

Thanks!  What do you think about the other 3 offers - everyday, everyday preferred and BCE preferred? Are the odds high for these too?

Re: Amex Pre-Qualified...

I would think he could get any of those. I would do only one, though. Good luck!

Re: Amex Pre-Qualified...

I think he’d be approved with his scores and thin profile. What are his CLs on other cards? If those limits are not on high side, AmX may give a low SL. Probably $1-2K.

|| AmX Cash Magnet $40.5K || NFCU CashRewards $30K || Discover IT $24.7K || Macys $24.2K || NFCU CLOC $15K || NFCU Platinum $15K || CitiCostco $12.7K || Chase FU $12.7K || Apple Card $7K || BOA CashRewards $6K

He should be fine with getting any one of them. Amex is quite lenient as long as his score is reasonably good and he has no previous bad history with them.

As of my own experience... When I got my first Amex, the only other card I had was a Citi card with $2k line but Amex approved me $8k. They can be quite generous with credit limit but experience may vary.

With the consideration of the AF, he should apply for the one that he wants. I agree that he will get the one he applies for, but only pick one for now and build history with Amex... good luck!!!  Smiley Happy

Re: Amex Pre-Qualified...

The only caution on the Gold is early on he may only get access to a low limit.  I have been frutrated with my AMEX Platinum to the point that I am cancelling it after just one year because the limits are low for me and I am tired of not knowing if a transaction will be approved.  My scores until a few months ago were mid 600's due to high utlization last year.  I would choose a credit card with a known limit over a charge card if my scores were under 700 (in hindsight).  BTW my Amex ED has a 9k limit but I can barely charge over 1k on my Platinum card.  No lates or baddies for the past 5 years so not sure what their issue is.

True, but OP stated his father has an 760 EX and a BOA that has just over a year of history among other DP's... Smiley Happy
