Thanks for the feedback everyone, I will try to let you know what happens in January.
Can someone explain to me, as I don't currently have an AE card, why waiting to January is advantageous in terms of backdating?

Ok. will make it quick and ez.
I just got my first amex. October 2014. So my member date is 2014. Correct?
So if I apply January any year. It will take my app month and combine it with my member since date. So example. If I apply for another amex January 2015. It will say card opened in January 2014. Making it a year old. 8 months older than my first card.
If I apply say January 2016. It will make that card on report. Opened jan 2014. My member date. Making it 2 years old. Even it's brand new. Making it older than my first card. Good for my AA of A and credit length. To boost scores. Hope this explains it. Amex new cards gets older with time. All goid for your scores.

Thank you very much. Makes sense. I was planning on applying now but I'll wait. I did though have an AMEX gold back in late 80s into early 90s until I closed the account because of a divorce. I hope when I get one now they'll be able to track that one down but not holding my breath. Would be great for AAoA.

No need for you wait until then. 1980s will add 25 years to your report. Even card new. It will report as a 25 year old card. Your scores will shoot up. Add on. They will know asap. From you social. You're golden.
Great to hear. No I have to decide which one

Well I would go revolver first. As it's a pain in case you don't want to pay in full Options always great. But you can get 1 charge and 1 revolved on same day. Same pull.

Ok. I'll go that route. Appreciate the advice
Make sure you check the AMEX prequal site first and sign up for card offers if nothing shows for you. It might be worth waiting for a good offer; prequal bonuses are usually much bigger than than the public offerings, especially for the Premier Rewards Gold and Platinum charge cards.

+1
With the profiles above of folks who are a shoe-in to get AMEX, it pays to shop carefully for those offers. And to not wait for January if 10+ years backdating.
