Amex keeps doing hard pull even though I have a card with them

   Amex just pulled my experian when I applied for blue cash today eventhough I have a delta sky miles card with them. I applied for Amex everyday last month and they pulled my report also. I thought once you have an account with them its a soft pull? I was denied both times so I'm extremley dissapointed smh.

When you applied, were you logged in and did you see the "You're pre-approved" text on the card application page or did it say something like "Expand your membership..."?

I went to pre approved screen I entered my information and it asked me to login to my account. When I logged in there were three cards to choose from and I choose the everyday card.

Did the card says preapproved after logging in?

No it did not say pre approved. Does it have have to say pre approved for it not be a HP?

I honestly don't know. I'm new to Amex but I've seen cards saying pre-approved and cards just saying "expand your membership" and I assume the first is a strong approval while the latter may not be.

My last app with Amex was a HP. First HP from Amex in two years. The two apps prior to that were SPs. All CLIs have been SPs.

Blame me for that. Whenever I get a card from a new bank they immediately nerf things like soft pull applications lol

This is just my observation, I think when words got out this summer that Amex was processing new apps from exiting customers with SPs only, Amex probably got a huge uptick in apps from those who may not otherwise have qualified because there is nothing to lose to app, I suspect this might have caused Amex to revisit this policy. I was approved for BCP in mid September cold apping through CK with just SP, stories of applicants getting hit with HPs like OP's started to surface last month, it would be interesting to hear from those who got SP only apps recently.
