So I found the public 125K Hilton Surpass offer, and clicked the link. I was already logged into the Amex website, so when I clicked on it it said, "You're already logged in. Click here to continue to your pre-filled application." I clicked continue, and at the top it says in big letters that I'm preapproved, but only gives an APR range.
I also went to the regular Amex home page to check for offers, and nothing comes up there as preapproved, including this card. I'm not going to apply for it, but what's the truth here? Is this a legit preapproval?
Whenever I see the “———— you are pre-approved”, I am always approved when I apply for the card.
I know some say they have been denied on that screen, but I can’t verify what verbiage was at the top of their screen.

So this is really interesting.
While logged in, any card I click "Apply" on, it says I'm preapproved for. I tried the Platinum, BCP, A couple of Delta cards, and the Hilton Surpass - all preapproved, but no set APR's on the revolvers, just a range.
I never got a set range either for that screen.
When I did my initial pre-approvals, those cards all had a set range except for the chargers of course. So once I was in with Amex, and I was checking the pre-approvals, I was skeptical because the range was not set.
There res is also another screen very similar to that one, except instead of “——— you are pre-approved” is says “——— we need additional info”. (Something to that affect).

@Anonymous I see a "You are preapproved" message on every single card, but all of them have an APR range EXCEPT BCE (already have it?), ED (have EDP), and Delta Gold. Those three all have set APRs, but show the same message. I realllllllly don't want to get a new card anytime soon, but if I see a solid APR on the SPG, I'm probably going to jump on it.
If you PIF moonthly, then APR doesnt matter
Being that you are already an active Amex cardholder, all app denials ( and most approvals these days ) are SPs so you really have nothing to lose
@DB ITS a solid P Approval i got 3 revolvers that way with sp and there is only income to put on this page its rock solid offer i tell you

Thanks for the info. I'm not interested in any more Amex cards, so I'll just enjoy the preapproval

That's not the point in this case. On several pre-approval sites (usually including AMEX), a set APR or a small range indicates a good chance of approval. A wide range indicates that the potential applicant should consider the pre-approval to be little more than marketing.
