I called Amex today to see if I could send in bank statements or paystubs so I could do a reconsideration on my starting limit. The lady asked me for some information, salary etc. then told me my credit limit increase was denied due to my fico score.
I told her that I didn't want to apply for a CLi and that was wrong what she did and she I couldn't talk to an underwriter so submitting a CLi request was the only option.
this is why having a language barrier between customers and reps can be harmful. i made it very clear I wanted to speak to an underwriter and not her, but she didn't transfer me and completely misunderstood what I said. And she ended up submitting a CLi request in the process.
Honestly you should cool your jets with AMEX , you were approved for 1K starting limit correct ? Which means it was a borderline approval . I would use the card max it to 1K rinse and repeat of few times
Yes,
it was borderline, I figured it was worth a try to see if they could do a recon. I wasn't really expecting anything.
but you're right, I just gotta wait. I was confused because chase has me at 8k, cap 1 has me at 5k. So I guess I just thought Amex would be more in line with them.
I'm starting to get the feeling that my score was just good enough to get me a $1000 borderline approval. But not good enough for anything more. So, chances are I won't get an increase until my score improves. Even at the 3/6 month mark. Which is okay, I'm just grateful to have the card.
.
There's plenty of DPs from people here that started out where you are with Amex that grew there limits significantly within a years time.
It was just a SP, they're going to continue to SP/monitor you regularly throughout your relationship with them, so it's not a big deal.
Do as advised above and just be patient. Once Amex fully opens their doors to you they can be very generous, and easily outpace Chase's generosity, and for sure Capital One's
My experience with amex is that they'll go 3X at 91 days. Doesn't seem to be based on usage. They appear to be total exposure sensitive. At one year, I requested $9000 to $27,000 on bce, granted. Same month, I apped hilton, approved, $1000. Seems like, "that's all you get this month". At 91 days, granted $1000 to $3000. At 6 months, requested $3000 to $9000, no can do, got $5900. This puts me at 45% reported income with them.
Set a reminder for 91 days.
Just relax. Take a deep breath. Give it time.
AmEx is very generous, especially in the first year. Just use the card for groceries and pay in full. You'll most likely get $3k in 90 days, then $9k 90 days after that, and $27k 90 days after that.
Patience.

Yes. I was approved at $1k. I was somewhat insulted that it was so far below my other limits.
Got a CLI to $3k. Still my lowest limit, but not so bad.
CLI to $9k. Now it's decent, not great, but ok compared to my other cards.
CLI to $27k. WOW! My highest CL! . . . All within about a year.
can you elaborate?
I have read that the first CLI can be done at 91 days but after that it's every six months. But I've also read that some people have gone from 1k to 27k within a year like you. So it sounds like you got increases every few months correct? What were your scores?
I'm worried because Amex Keeps denying me for things because my score is too low. Including denying the increase the rep submitted without telling me for "credit score")
so I'm afraid they will continue to deny any CLI requests for the same reason. Until my score improves.
also I heard that the 1,000 starting limits are much harder to grow because you have to prove yourself much more than others would

Approved for Blue Cash Preferred at $1k on 04/12/24.
I had previously been denied a Blue Cash Everyday because of too many recently opened acccounts. So I figured I barely got in with the 1k SL.

I applied and was approved for an American Express Blue Cash Preferred.
$1,000 SL
How soon can I try that 3x CLI?
0% interest for 12 months, then 24.24%.
I was able to add it to Google Pay so I can start working on that SUB right away.
I got a notice from Experian that Amex pulled from them. My Ex 8 was 777. Dropped to 770 with this pull.
I was denied for a BCE a few months back. Reason given was too many recently opened accounts. Well, now I have more recently opened accounts than I did then, so I shouldn't be surprised at the limit. I was 2/6, 3/12, 6/24. Prequal page was showing Platinum, Gold, and BCP and I decided to go for it.
When I was able to ask for a CLI after 3 months, I asked for 9k, even though everyone here said you could get 3x and I was asking for 9x. I figured if it was too high, they'd just counter-offer with a lower amount. It was denied. I got no counter-offer, just no. AND I could not even apply for another CLI for another 3 months.
Now that may have been because I asked for too much. But it may have been that they just weren't going to give me any CLI at that time and made me wait.
Then when I could ask again, I requested $3k and was approved on 10/20/24.

@mgood wrote:Finally!
When I got approved for the Blue Cash Preferred, it came with a rather insulting $1k SL.When it allowed me to request a CLI, I knew that I could ask for up to 3x. But I was pushing my luck and asked for $9k, which would be a 9x increase, just to see what would happen. Well, it was declined. No counter offer, nothin'. Just NO. And it wouldn't allow me to request again for several more months.
So I finally saw where I could again request an increase. I had just paid down some of my balances and my scores are starting to creep back up. I waited several days until everything reported, particularly on Experian 'cause I think that's what Amex looks at.
This morning I asked for $3k and was instantly approved.
That's still my lowest limit, but it gives me a little breathing room. If sometime in the near future I can get another 3x to $9k, then it will look respectable next to my other cards.
My Experian FICO 8 is 761.
0/6, 3/12, 6/24 on new revolving accounts. AZE11
4% aggregate utilization on revolvers but was 65% on that BCP because it's still in the 0% interest and I have other things that are charging interest that I'm paying down. Finances before FICOs and all that.
I have a personal loan where I owe $44k out of $49k that I used to buy a Corvette.
Income is $78k. Rent is still crazy-low at $700.
I haven't even used the BCP in several months because I was getting 10% back on groceries last quarter with my Disco (5%, but doubled because it's in the first year). I spent $119 on it yesterday, but that's still pending.
91 days later on 01/19/25, I asked for $9k and was approved.

@mgood wrote:Amex comes through on day 91, after trying for a couple days and being told it was too soon since my latest increase.
Blue Cash Preferred was my lowest limit at $3k. Now $9k. Instant approval.
Cap 1, Citi, and Disco all say I have too much debt for them to risk it, lol. My DTI has not looked good since buying the 'Vette
EQ8 761, TU8 749, EX8 766. Revolving accounts 2/6, 3/12, 8/24 and too many inquiries.
SL was 1k. Got 3x to 3k. Now another 3x to 9k.
I'll probably still PC it to a Blue Cash Everyday in April when the annual fee hits.
Another 91 days, on 04/20/25, I asked for $27k. Didn't really think they'd give me that much, but asked for the full 3x just to see what would happen. Approved!

This Blue Cash Preferred has gone from my lowest CL to my highest CL in about a year.
Opened 04/12/24 with a SL of $1,000
10/20/24 x3 -> $3,000
01/19/25 x3 -> $9,000
04/20/25 x3 -> $27,000
Highest CL ever. Previous high, now #2, is FNBO Evergreen $25k.
Largest increase ever, +18k. (Largest in dollar amount, anyway. Largest percentage increase was USB Cash+, 5x from 2k to 10k.)
I'm still planning to downgrade it to BCE when the annual fee kicks in
What?
After hitting the SUB, I've put about $150/month on the card.
With time running out on the 0% interest period, I've been aggressively paying off the balance.
PIF my old statement balance of $915, but bought some groceries. New statement balance is $146, which is my current balance.
769 Ex FICO 8 today. Ex 9 was 756 on April 1 and probably hasn't changed much since FICO 8 went up 1 point.
1.6% card utilization, 6% aggregate.
$49k personal loan that I still owe about 82% on.
More aggregate revolving credit than I have any business with at my income, 80-ish-k and getting real close to a quarter mil in credit card limits.91-day rule proves true again. It said it was too soon since my last increase when I tried at 1:05 am central time. Instant approval at 6:10 am.
Yea see the major difference is your score is almost 100 points higher than mine.
the reason they kept giving me for my denials are "fico score"
when the rep accidentally applied for me today, I told her my chase card was at 8k, so that's what she put in for "desired limit"
so maybe I was denied because 1k to 8k was way too much of an increase, Or maybe my score is just too low and I would have been denied if I asked for 3k. Who knows.
