So after getting educated here earlier last year, in the 6-8 months that followed I was able to bring my score up about 100 points from the 630's to 730's. Easily got an Amazon Store Card 6 months ago and CLI to $6K 90 days after approval with score in the 710-715 range. Got my USAA Reward VISA CLI from $2,500 to $5,500.
Wanted just 1-2 more cards, one with lowest rate and other with best reward value. Applied for Discover on a pre-qual but in the month or so between receiving the prequal in the mail, two collections show up on Equifax which I wasn't monitoring Equifax and Discover pulled EQ and denied me about 6 weeks ago. Got the collections taken off in 23 days as they definitely had nothing to do with me. UTI Total and Individual on my 2 cards below 9%, a couple inquiries fell off from a couple years ago, and I'm hitting all time records in the 730's (FICO) and 752 TU Vantage 3 record.
So I join NFCU 10 days ago, apply for Visa, get $3K 10.99%. (Had to send tax return to prove income as I'm self employed.) Okay, that's my low rate card. Now I need a reward card. I figure scores are good, everyone here loves NFCU, why not go for their Amex Rewards card. Denied. Letter says my pre-existing NFCU Visa is too new. Makes sense and can't say I was surprised.
Let me pause and say, in retrospect I think I mistook a lot of messages I ran across about people coming out of "the garden" and applying for several cards in a short time period. So I thought it was okay to do. With only 3 or less inquiries in each bureau in the last 2 years and understanding the hard pulls only make a very minor change to score, I thought it was safe to just "go for it" and get the cards I want sooner than later to start building payment history ASAP.
So next I tried Chase Freedom. Looks like they pulled EQ and EX. Denied. I've got a 4-yo closed account from Chase that has late payments on it so I'm guessing that contributed. Then I tried Discover. No instant response. Instead of pulling EQ they pull EX this time after waiting all that time for the collections to be removed on EQ which they pulled 6 weeks earlier! I was pissed as EQ is where I had only 2 pulls in last 2 years but I was up to 4 HPs in the past 4 months on EX. Letter from Discover said too many recent inquiries. Makes sense.
Then I discovered the best reward out there (for my needs) in my opinion when I re-reviewed all the reward cards: The Wells Fargo Propel AMEX. Not sure how I missed it earlier (not a fan of Wells Fargo Bank made me ignore at first.) Denied. Haven't got the letter yet. This is the one I really want though now. It is a phenomenal reward structure for a no fee card. Discover has very little card benefits.
Had I known the banks were going to be so sensitive to seeing 3-4 hard pulls in 5 months time, I would have waited longer and planned my app strategy better.
Looks like I took about a 4-5 point hit from all the pulls so my FICO is right about 726-730 depending on the bureau. I'm guessing my best bet going forward is NFCU Amex or NFCU Flagship once I've had my NFCU Visa at least 91 days?? Is the Flagship significantly hard to get? I believe my score should still be high enough to get any of these cards I previously applied for (except Chase), I just am not sure how long I'll need to wait to re-apply to not get red-flagged for too many recent inquiries? All the sites I belong to are matching me with a lot more cards and the prequal mail is increasing, but it seems maybe a lot of this prequal stuff may just be looking at a score and not number of recent inquries? (My Experian now has 6 HP's in 2 years 4 of those in the past 45 days - banks sure seem to prefer Experian these days.)
What's a good plan going forward if I want to get the Wells Fargo Propel AMEX or the NFCU AMEX or Flagship VISA?
That is unfortunate about your denials. Best practice is to research, research, and more research. Hopefully, you will have more success moving forward.

I would agree with AllZero research and then research some more. When I did my app spree after I closed on my house I was only planning on applying for 3 new accounts. 1 pull from each bureau and researched on this board for months on all data points I could get. From scores members were getting approved at too what bureau and score that lender uses to make sure I was at my best when I went to submit my applications.
In the end I ended up opening 7 new accounts in under 45 days. Was approved for all cards I applied for except the Amex Gold but knew that was strictly a gamble on all the DP I researched. App Sprees are really all profile driven scores are just a number but definitely doesn't decide the outcome. Even inquiries sometimes don't matter all that much in some cases. As long as you plan and research you can be successful.
Whether it's a app spree or just a single card it's always best to research this forum for the data points for that lender and card. So when you do apply your confident that it will be a approval.
I think your thin profile combined with recent credit-seeking may have led to this result. I don't think you mentioned income, or utilization, so those could have played a role as well. I wouldn't worry too much about it, what's done is done. Effects of inquiries fade pretty quickly and are no longer considered in scoring in most models after one year, though they could still be considered by lenders for up to two years. My advice would be to wait a few months and try again for one of those cards, then wait a few months and try again for another. But that's my quick and mostly uninformed opinion, take it with a grain of salt. Good luck!
I've got 6 inquires on Experian in last 12 years. 4 of those in the last two weeks when I did my spree app and got 4 inquiries on the same day. As I mentioned my UTI is 8-9% Total and no more than 9% on a single card (I even distribute the balances although I'm going to use the free balance transfer and 0% APR I got on the new NFCU Visa to go for AZEO and only carry a balance on the NFCU card. $100K with a DTI on just debt payments of 7% DTI with rent payment is 30%.
I see one of my inquiries on Experian come off in June, by that time at least 4 months will have passed from my app spree. I'll try to make sure my Experian score is maxed in the meantime and go for the Wells Fargo Propel. If that doesn't work, I'm done applying for anything that puts a HP on EX.
I thought I read you can call NFCU and ask for a prequal for adding a second card? Not sure if that's true. But TU, I have only 2 inquiries and Vantage 3 score is currently 752 so my understanding is NFCU starts you out slow but is fairly quick to give you CLI and/or second card, so I think if I don't get the Propel I'll just settle for the NFCU Amex or Flagship Visa and be done with it. (Going for a second card before hitting the online button to see if they'll also do a CLI on the Visa Platinum - I'd be surprised if they did both but since CLI request is a SP, can't hurt after trying for a second card.)
Have I overlooked any important considerations?
Another thought I just had was that just like in many cases people are more apt to voice a complaint vs a compliment about a product or service. I'm sure people are more hesitant to post about app failures than successes in general. Hence the fact I ran across a lot more posts about getting successful approvals on more than one card in a short period of time, even people with mid 600 scores! But as you spend more and more time digging, you do find the posts from people having similar experiences than me. So ya, research, research, research.
NFCU only allows one card every 91 days/3 full statements, with a max of 3 cards. Hence the denial on the Amex. Also, NFCU prequal is unreliable, don't go by it at all.
To add to what others are saying, the search feature is your friend here... really a lifeline!
I'll search for the card I'm interested in and "decline" and then sort by most recent... doing that gives you a sense of what the cards are looking at in the current economic climate.
Also, If you do a prequal site, be aware that they may do the soft pull on one CRA but the HP will often come from a different one. Disco pulls EQ for prequalification but EX for the actual app.
There is also a Credit Pulls Database that you can find through a google search... though it doesn't seem to be getting people reporting as much as they used to. The Credit Pulls DB will show who pulled what, whether someone was denied or approved and often their credit score.
Finally, if you really have your heart set on Wells Fargo, there is some data to suggest that applying in person at a branch is often more successful than cold apping online... you might even open a checking and/or savings to make them think you're going all in with them. This was pre-Covid so not sure if that is still the case.
Navy will likely give you what you whatever you ask for in a few months. But if you really want Wells Fargo, position yourself to go with that... there is something to be said for diversified credit portfolios because if something goes wrong with one lender, you limit your exposure.
A couple of years ago, basically all I had was Cap 1....3 cards with them (basically because they were the only ones giving me credit back in the day. I screwed up and in the blink of an eye, 2 of the 3 were shut down including my oldest card... 2/3rds of my available credit gone overnight. The only thing that kept the 3rd card alive was the fact that Comenity bought the Sony cards so that moved over.
I had to scramble to try to replace this trade lines by opening secured cards with Disco, Citi, and USBank.
But the good news is that now I have a more robust portfolio as a result.
So as much as I love Navy right now, I know I need to keep plugging away with the other lenders in case something, Dog-forbid, made Navy have to scale back or they decided they needed to do a bunch of adverse actions to mitigate their outstanding risk.
Good luck!
Sorry for your denials. I always say, let success (or failure) be your guide. After one denial, you went for another, and then a couple more. LOL.
I see you have some gambler blood in you. Double down, all in! I kid but inquiries are not that big of a deal like you said and you don't have that many. I would take it easy for at least 6 months, if you fail again, I strongly suggest do not keep trying. Good luck on your journey!
