Application rejected in the mail, then approved - HSBC Premier World Elite

Very confused; I applied for the HSBC Premier World Elite Mastercard mid Dec through my banker. However, I believe the application was processed after the holidays and I was rejected. The letter stated that there was no spending power and too many inquiries. The account was also in overdraft at the time so I understood.

A week later, I deposited an amount to the account for my tuition and a little while after that, I receive the welcome package for the card and today, I received the same letter in the mail except saying they approved my application.

How come they reconsidered my application without my appealing and I don't think my banker did so either since I didn't heard anything?

Probably the same reason that Payday Lenders are in business... to make money. It may seem like someone was looking out for you... and perhaps that same banker followed up on your behalf.

But, my guess is that regardless of that; someone at the bank ultimately knew that they could potentially make a ton of interest income off of the type of consumers that have had a tendency to make financial mistakes.

Thusly, the initial underwriter was overruled; whether it was an automated algorithm, or a manual review... and not necessarily in earnest, but definitely in aid of making money.

HSBC is mess, like one of the corporations from a satirical or dystopian movie, but it actually somehow exists is this world

11k

First card I ever got in the US was the normal HSBC premier mastercard I got last apr, no ssn back then, sophmore college student and they gave me 6.5k for that card. Then got Discover It in Nov after I got my SSN and only got 1.5k for that card. Have been rejected for all Chase and Citi products. Approved for Amex Plat two weeks ago.

Amex Everyday Preferred app still pending. They're waiting for me to confirm address and send tax documents even though I couldn't file last year so idk what I should do for that.

You should probably call them up and have them reconsider their decision to approve you haha...on the real though, congrats on a nice SL that didn’t seem like it was meant to be.

Is it rare for college students to get 6.5k as their SL for their first card? Why would they trust me as I had no SSN then nor did I keep a lot in deposits there. Do bankers have a certain level of influence when they hand in the application to the credit department?
