I have a Delta SkyMiles Blue card. I would like to apply for a Delta SkyMiles Reserve card. I don't want to upgrade from Blue to a Reserve because I want to get the actual signup bonus of 85,000 bonus miles.
Will I be able to do that without any problem or will they detect that I already have a Blue card and force me to upgrade?
Once I get the Reserve, should I cancel the Blue?

You can have more than 1 delta card.

You should keep the Delta Blue since it has $0 AF, you can upgrade at least to gold if you had it before, so when AMEX offers you a substantial amount of bonus miles of at least 40,000 miles.
Then you should take that offer, than downgrade after one year to Blue. You can do the upgrade/downgrade offers yearly, as long as the bonus miles are substantial.
As @Brian_Earl_Spilner mentioned, you can have multiple tiers at the same time of the Delta (Blue, Gold, Platinum, Reserve) AMEX cards.
You can have multiple of the same card as well. I downgraded my reserve and platinum to blues.

This is surprising. What is the benefit of having multiple Blues?

I would think that they downgraded those cards just to keep the credit line open without having to pay annual fees.

Bingo. Upgrade downgrade games. Not traveling right now, want to keep the history and the upgrade opportunity open.
