Applying for my first card

Hi All, I'm looking to apply for my first card. I've been an AU under my mom's Amex accounts for a while so CK has generated a Vantage score of 786 for me, but I tried to find my FICO score via Discover and freecreditscore and kept receiving an error (so I'm assuming I don't have a FICO score due to my limited history). I got prequalified for the Discover It Cash card, but it gave me a large range APR so I guess it's just an ad. And Cap One prequalified me for Savor, Savor one, Venture Rewards, and Quicksilver 0% APR 15 months, but I think those were also just ads because they gave me the highest APR for all of them. I'm most interested in the Discover It Cash card and the Cap One Quicksilver, but would it be worth it for me to even apply? Or should I just go for a secured card first? Thanks in advance!

Re: Applying for my first card

Capital one and Discover are good to start with because both offer secured cards.(Discover Secured card best secured card out there in my book)..... In your shoes I would apply for a Discover it Cash Back and QuickSilver or Savor One... If denied I would apply for the secured cards the same day in attempt to use the same Hard pull... The authorized user gives you a slight advantage to start off with unsecured cards.... I'm assuming your inquires are low or at zero so don't be afraid to get your feet wet....

Re: Applying for my first card

Thanks for the input! I think I'm gonna go for Cap One. Would it be bad to apply for both the Quicksilver and Savor One at the same time since it will only be one hard pull? I like the idea of having one flat rate cash back card, and one for categories. But I might be getting over eager...it might be better to pick one, build my credit with it, and apply for a better flat rate cash back card later on like the citi double cash

Re: Applying for my first card

*Edited*
Technically wouldn't hurt if it's done at the same time.... If that's the set up you want I say go for it....

Although Some lenders have rules on how many cards you can get with them in a 30 day period... Just stay mindful of that going forward... I think you'll be ok with Capital one..The average minimum I've seen on rules like that is about 2 cards..

No matter how much preparation and thought you give you'll learn that your eventually gonna have to pull the trigger on the cards you want... Smiley Happy

Re: Applying for my first card

I probably would go for the Discover it card myself as my youngest child just was approved for that card with limited history.
He had no AU accounts on his reports.

Also:
My wife had no history at all and started with a Cap1 secured card, and now has a great credit score with both Chase and Amex cards.

Although unsecured cards are truly what you are shooting for.
You score looks good from what I see.
I am in Hope's that you can get one of them based on your score and the AU accounts.

Re: Applying for my first card

Did you get the max apr for the QS?
And do you have any pre-quals showing for Discover?
If Discover only shows you the secured as pre-qual, my suggestion would be to wait a month, for QS to report to CB, and then apply for Discover - think you would get an unsecured Discover this way.

Re: Applying for my first card

I did get the max apr for the QS LOL and I did get prequalified for the Discover It Cash card. When I checked last night they didn't specify whether it was their secured or unsecured card, but I think it was their unsecured card. It was the 5% cash back in rotating categories. They gave me a large range APR though, so it may have just been an ad because....I just rechecked now and they prequalified me for the Discover It Secured card with more specific info and single rate APR (the highest one). Thanks for the tip!
