Approval odds Torrid/Comenity

9 years ago I had defaulted on 2 store credit cards (one of them being comenity) was about to have my car repo and was severely behind on a personal loan through my CU. I was able to pay off my car before the repo, pay off my personal loan and start chipping away at my student loan. My Best Buy CC debt ($1500) was transferred banks and somehow that account got lost in space and ended up falling off my credit prior to the 7y mark. My Comenity card (Maurices, $540) fell off shortly before 7y as well. Since then I have obtained a vehicle loan through my CU for $4500 having put $4k down and have been making early payments on it every month for over a year. On 2/08 I went on a whim and applied for the Cap One Platinum CC and was approved for $500. Has anyone ever experienced Comenity approving them again after a default like that? Before I defaulted I had a score range in the 720's and currently on credit karma my TU is 645 and EQ 630. Sorry for the lengthy post I am just really looking to add to my wallet and get my credit rebuild going a bit faster. Any advice/insight is appreciated!

Update: FICO 8 IS EX 611, TU 614, EQ 612.

Im not sure how Comenity is with old chargeoffs but given enough time most banks will forgive eventually. Remember you dont necessarily have to get store cards to build your credit faster. They are good if you really use that store and can benefit from doing so . Id its just to get a card, perhaps try the prequals with Discover and Amex. Good luck on rebuilding, most of us have had to do so and we sometimes over app in an effort to speed up the process. Eventually we find with time and patience you can accomplish alotSmiley Happy

Re: Approval odds Torrid/Comenity

Thank you! I agree with the advice about store card's. I shop at Torrid several times a month and figured it'd make the most sense to start there if I were to apply for a store CC, then became hesitant when I found oit they were Comenity!

Re: Approval odds Torrid/Comenity

I'm not sure how comenity is with forgiving folks but I'd say your best bet would be to try for the shopping cart trick. Not sure if you're familiar with this trick and how it works or not but imo it's probably one of the best things comenity's got going for them, getting a card with no HP whatsoever feels ever so slightly like I'd think getting away with murder might feel lol

Not sure if torrid is one that the sct works with or not, I did a quick search and didn't find much aside from the assumption that it's at least possible, also apparently folks have found success with a real life version of the sct where they were preapproved in the store while checking out (you might need to be a rewards club member for this, not certain though).

If neither of these avenues pan out for you (or if the regular sct doesn't work and you don't feel like going to a physical location to try your luck) you could also try the shopping cart trick method on one of their other sites, which would at least tell you if they might be open to letting you back in. The easiest seems to be Victoria's secret, I got it as my first pop up however there was an error somewhere along the way and I never ended up recieving it, but I did get another one for overstock which I did receive and that card has consistently been my highest credit limit and grown regularly so they're worth a try as well.

Google shopping cart trick and you'll find a list of other stores you can try it on as well, I tried most of them back when I first began building credit but the only ones I got popups for were the 2 I mentioned (also got an offer in the mail from boscovs a month or two later but didn't pull the trigger as I was already happy with the cards I had, but maybe that's a possibility for you as well - so if you want to go this route just keep on trying and I bet something will come your way sooner or later)

Best of luck with whatever you decide to do Heart time fixes most everything Smiley Happy

Edit: also it's probably worth it for you to check out your actual fico scores just to see where you stand, there's the cct free trial everyone around here loves (haven't actually done that one myself though) or you can get your EX fico 8 for free straight from experian at freecreditscore.com or with discover's free credit scorecard. I'm also a huge fan of discover's secured card, they've been really great to me and if you're open to a secured card that's the one I'd tell you to go for - another bonus is the free TU fico 8 they offer you as a discover cardholder. Not sure if you've done the prequal circuit yet but that's definitely a good thing to try every so often as well if you're rebuilding, you never know what you might be qualified for until you check - if you do get any though definitely check to make sure it's legit and has a single APR listed (or a very small range), BOA for example has prequal offers for everyone but they're VERY unreliable. Both us bank and amex had single APR prequals for me though and both were approved so those could be good ones to try. Again good luck and let us know what happens with everything!

Re: Approval odds Torrid/Comenity

I’m a bit confused. Are you saying on February 8 you were approved for Cap One Platinum or was it February 2008?

It sounds like you are rebuilding. A lot of us here has (including myself). Search the credit card and credit card application forums for Cap One credit steps and SCT. Just don’t go crazy and think strategically - if I was a creditors what would I want to see a file like and approve.

The other posters has great ideas about getting your real FICO scores. Some cards will provide you with your actual FICO 8 or 9 score. Others will use a different model (like credit karma) which no one uses anymore. Cap One Credit Score is NOT a FICO score. Discover’s credit scorecard is FICO 8 for TU and doesn’t require you to get one of their credit cards.

Read up on the posts here. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Knowledge is very powerful as you rebuild!

Totally with you on all this, and that's a really good point on not going crazy with the shopping cart trick lol I feel like that could be a pretty easy rabbit hole to fall down

Just a note though discover offers two different fico scorecards (both fico 8s). The one that you can get without being a cardholder is EX (you can get it as a cardholder as well though, it has its own website I usually just google discover free credit scorecard and it's like the first thing that comes up), the TU fico they offer is only for cardholders (that's the one on the app and website when you're logged into your account and go to the scorecard tab). Kinda odd that they have two different ones (and they don't even advertise it either - not that I've seen at least) but I'm not complaining lol free FICOs are always a win in my book Cat Very Happy
