Approved for Amex Delta Platinum - Question Re App for Amex Platinum

Hello everyone!  I rarely post here, but am a frequent lurker and have learned a lot as a result.

After a lot of hard work, my credit score has steadily risen over the last year.  My score about 12 months ago was in the mid 500s and now rated as "good" as of February across all three bureaus and currently EQ676, TU692 and EX672.   I've been stalking the Amex prequal site pretty frequently over the last 30 days and several came up for me, including platinum.  It's my goal to get that card, but settled on applying for Delta Platinum instead because I was afraid I'd be declined for the one I ultimately want, plus they have a great SUB for Delta right now.  To my surprise, I was approved!

So here's my question.  When would be a good time to apply for straight Platinum?  I was thinking September and in the interim, using my new Delta card as much as possible to prove responsible use in hopes that they'd approve me for the other one in six months.  Would love to hear your thoughts/suggestions.

If your profile can support it and you can meet the SUB requirements for both cards, I couldn't see why not, especially if the Platinum still displays as a pre-qualified offer.  Just do the math + consider the AFs and benefits to determine if both are a good fit in the long run depending on your spend/lifestyle.

Is the Delta Platinum your first AmEx card?

Excellent points!  I'll resume domestic travel come September followed by more frequent international travel next year, so the Delta card works for me now and platinum makes sense for me a bit further down the line.  AFs will be easily be negated by benefits.  Not sure if I'll qualify for the SUB once I apply, but I'd be ok if I didn't as that's not the only reason I want the card.

Thanks for the advice!

Absolutely, anytime.

If you prefer a more conservative approach, nothing wrong with waiting a few more months to see if Platinum is still viable.  The only thing I would add is that recently there's been increased SUBs with Platinum (100K or 75K MRs depending on where you look) that can make the 'jump' worthwhile given that the usual SUB is around 60K.  No pressure, of course, just something to consider if that matters.

And, congrats on your Delta Platinum approval btw 👍
