Boeing has  around 153,000 employees (Thats Worldwide, in 65 countries.)

BECU has more then 1.2 million members.

https://www.depositaccounts.com/banks/boeing-employees-cu.html

They did branch out beyond Boeing, as in decades ago. Which is how they've become one of the top 5 largest credit unions in the nation and largest financial institution in the state of Washington. Sounds like a clueless and uneducated loan officer you spoke with.

Assuming every single Boeing employee (in all 65 countries) is a BECU member, thats not even 13% of their total membership, which is definitely nowhere close to being a majority.

Perhaps I left out what I felt was or should be obvious.

These credit unions even when as exclusive as say, Navy Federal, allow people who once served to keep their accounts. They allow family and household members to join.

I am positive in the (103 year) history of Boeing they have employed more than "153,000" people.  When you factor in children (2.5 children per household on average) and spouses you could reasonably reach the conclusion that over 50% of the "1.2 million members" could in fact be Boeing employees and/or family members who would be considered employees by the credit union because of how they were designated as eligible for membership.

I do not know exact numbers, nor did I claim to.

I would venture to say it would not be unreasonable to think if Boeing employs 153k people with an estimated average of 10 year employee retention rate (probably closer to 5 years), over the last 50 years they have had roughly 750,000 employees. If you add spouses as members that's potentially 1.5 million people, add children and your over 2.25 million people. Divide by 3 (assuming only 1 in 3 eligible employees actually join) and you are looking at 750,000 of the 1.2 million members.

If you further look at how most credit unions expand membership they tend to start by allowing people close to a branch in first. Therefore I do not believe the Loan Officer's statement was "clueless and uneducate" the metrics alone support a feasible assumption that the majority of membership could in fact be designated as employees whether that member is an active employee, retired employee, former employee or immediate family of one of the previously mentioned groups.

BECU started in 1935, opened up to the entire state of Washington in 2002 and this press release from 2003 states "It serves close to 323,000 members worldwide and has assets of over $4 billion."
https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20030317005184/en/BECU-Employs-Open-Solutions-Core-Processing...

They've literally quadrupled their number of members and assets in the past 17/18 years since opening up to the entire state. Most other big credit unions have followed the same exact explosive growth pattern since opening up membership to large geographic areas rather then just serving their initial field of membership from way back when they first started decades and decades ago before our time.

Re: BECU

Britt585,

I'm sorry to hear that BECU has put a roadblock in front of you over a credit card. There are two things going on here I have reservations about: 1. BECU wants to grow its membership base but wants to apply a more strict standard to members outside the WA and Boeing footprint. To me that's a potential discriminatory practice and it resembles redlining. Every BECU member should be able to obtain credit cards and loans based on their credit worthiness and ability to pay, not based on your address. 2. BECU may feel the CU will have issues with the membership tied to Boeing. Basically every campus worldwide is closed. With several thousands furloughed and potential impact of others ties to Boeing and the CU, BECU may have concerns over potential credit card defaults.

I personally have issues with creditors wanting to see tax returns for credit card. The only time I could see that is if you were self employed. Any other situation, I don't think it's warranted, but that's my personal opinion.

Im only planning on parking money there to save. I have no intentions of obtaining credit with them in the short term future.  Please keep us posted.

Re: BECU

Thanks for sharing.....6 months pay stubs and 2 year tax returns is extreme in my opinon. I say that because no matter where you live its possible to default on a credit card or loan. People are being laid off everyday due to the impact of the pandemic. I don't mind providing proof of income (paystubs) however 2 yrs tax return....IT'S TO MUCH...I'm going to sleep on it and see if its worth all this. I forgot to mention the rep gave me her email address to email ALL everythingh....so hopefully if I decide to proceed nomore snail mail......SL is $15K for the visa I was approved for....I don't know if it's worth it...ughhh

Man they have gotten worse 😞I was one of the early members who opened account funded it got my credit cards and then bank locked my accounts . I had to send DL utility bill and SS card but no income verfication. This took weeks because they kept saying they had not gotten info. I called and called and finally someone checked and well look they had it the whole time🥺

I have 2 credit cards and a LOC and I am pleased with my lines however if they had asked for all that stuff in the beginning I would have declined .

I have no problem supplying tax returns for loans but credit cards ummm nope, but that's just my personal belief.

Re: BECU

Sorry you're going through this. I had the same situation, they even told me my address didn't exist. It was a new development so I took a picture of my house and the dang street sign. I was lucky and they gave me a "one time" email address to send all docs. I tried the faxing thing 4 times and no luck. With that said the $18K credit card and $15K LOC was worth it so I didn't give up.

For any out of state members signing up, I suggest giving it a week or two before applying for any products other than savings/checking.
